SunPayus Leaves G2 Esports and Becomes the New AWPer for FUT Esports

The transfer saga that kept the Counter-Strike 2 scene busy for the better part of three months is over. Álvaro „SunPayus” García has officially parted ways with G2 Esports and joined FUT Esports, where he takes over the AWP duties.

How the G2 chapter fell apart

SunPayus arrived at G2 Esports last summer thanks to coach Eetu „sAw” Saha, who knew the Spaniard well from their previous stints together. The idea was simple: pull the once feared monster back out of a player who had been going through a weaker period. That plan never came together, and before the second half of this season SunPayus was moved to the bench. His spot went to Artem „r1nkle” Moroz, a sniper six years his junior.

FUT Esports were the only serious option

Once he became available, only one name kept circling around him – FUT Esports. The organization wanted an upgrade over Nikita „cmtry” Samolotov, whose form at the AWP had not been consistent enough. On top of pure firepower, the 27-year-old Spaniard brought something the roster was missing: experience. The current lineup has an average age of just over 20, and thanks to his vocal presence SunPayus can slot in as a secondary caller.

For a long time it looked like the two organizations would never agree on terms. FUT Esports therefore tested alternatives in Henrich „sl3nd” Hevesi and Alan „flayy” Krupa, but neither of them was the upgrade the team was looking for at the sniper position. The deadlock broke in mid-September, when SunPayus started showing up with the team on the practice server.

G2 Esports said goodbye to the player yesterday and FUT Esports welcomed him today. He clearly made the most of the extended summer break – his post about the move came with a holiday photo. Roster moves like this one are shaking up the whole scene right now, and we also covered ENCE’s academy roster as well as the return of ENVY.

When will you see him in action

The player who finished 2023 as the sixth best in the world will get his first chance to prove how hungry he is only at the end of October. Before that debut tournament he at least has plenty of time to build chemistry with his new teammates.
