If you still have Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis sitting on your phone or PC, the clock is almost out. Square Enix is pulling the plug on the gacha retelling of FF7 on Tuesday, October 6. After that date the game becomes completely unplayable and effectively stops existing – this is a full end of service, not a maintenance break.
What exactly is ending
Ever Crisis launched in 2023 as a free-to-play, gacha-driven reimagining of the Final Fantasy 7 story, covering the original game as well as its various spin-offs. It racked up millions of downloads over its run, but that wasn’t enough to keep the servers alive.
- Shutdown date: Tuesday, October 6
- Platforms affected: PC, Android and iOS
- Current status: already delisted – new downloads are off the table
- If you already own it: you can keep playing right up to the end-of-service date
In practice that means there’s no way to jump in fresh anymore. Anyone who hasn’t installed Ever Crisis yet has effectively missed the window, and anyone who has should treat the next few days as a farewell tour. Details around the closure live on the official Ever Crisis site.
Another FF7 live-service casualty
This isn’t the first time a Final Fantasy 7 live-service project has been shut down. Square Enix released the battle royale Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier in 2021, and it closed just two years later after failing to carve out space in an overcrowded battle royale market. Ever Crisis lasted longer, but the outcome is the same.
Other live-service entries in the series have met similar fates. Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius ended in 2024 after close to a decade, and more recently Final Fantasy 14 Mobile was permanently shut down – though the PC and console versions of FF14 are unaffected and still running, as you can tell from the regular freebies like the Regalia Type-G mount.
The MMOs are still standing
Both of the franchise’s MMORPGs remain online. Final Fantasy 11 is 24 years old at this point and still attracts new players, while Final Fantasy 14 is where Square Enix puts its main live-service focus, backed by substantial free updates and large premium expansions.
What’s next for the series this month
There is some good news to balance out the shutdown: Final Fantasy Resonance launches on October 22 with a wide roster of fan-favorite characters pulled from across series history. Remnants of Brave Exvius are set to live on through it, so longtime fans at least get a nostalgic reunion to look forward to.
