Xbox boss Asha Sharma sent an internal message to employees saying that Microsoft has prepared for the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI like no other gaming platform. The note was shared publicly by reporter Tom Warren, and according to other people familiar with the situation it means one specific thing: Microsoft has secured exclusive rights to cloud streaming of the game.
At first glance that sounds like great news for anyone without a console. Xbox Cloud Gaming runs in a dedicated app and in browsers, so in theory it could be a backdoor way to play Grand Theft Auto VI on PC at launch. The reality looks a lot less generous.
Xbox CFO: not exclusive, and not on PC
Once the story about exclusive streaming rights started spreading across social media, Xbox CFO Matthew Ball stepped in with a clarification. “We’re looking forward to GTA VI launching on Xbox on November 19, although the game will not be streamed exclusively, nor on PC,” he wrote in a post on X.
That statement is not exactly crystal clear. If GTA VI really does stream through Xbox Cloud Gaming while the PC and browser options disappear, it would be an unusual arrangement. Streamed games normally follow the same rules across every device and platforms don’t tend to carve out exceptions like this. With a release of this scale, though, few things would be surprising. We’ve already covered how Xbox reacted to GTA 6 pre-orders and how the rolling midnight launch could work in players’ favor.
The catch: monthly streaming limits
There’s another unpleasant detail waiting for anyone planning to stream the most anticipated game of the decade. Starting in November, Xbox is introducing monthly caps on cloud streaming usage:
- Essential – 5 hours per month
- Premium – 10 hours per month
- Ultimate – 15 hours per month
Any additional hours have to be purchased separately. For a game the size of GTA 6, 15 hours is barely an evening or two of serious play.
New streaming-only plans are coming
Next month Microsoft is also launching special plans built purely around streaming, which won’t be tied to the Game Pass library. They’ll be cheaper, but you’ll only be able to stream titles you actually bought in the Xbox or PC Store.
For reference, Game Pass Essential currently costs 239 CZK per month, Premium 329 CZK and Ultimate 499 CZK. GTA 6 launches on November 19.
