Phantom Blade Zero is just weeks away from release, and if you were planning to put the box on your shelf, you may be out of luck. According to information shared by the retailer Play-Asia in response to a customer inquiry, the wuxia action RPG will not be available as a physical copy, at least not when it arrives on October 29.

Neither S-Game nor the official Phantom Blade Zero channels have commented on the situation at the time of writing. That means two things are still open: whether a disc version shows up later, and whether the studio ever planned one at all. For now, the only confirmed way to play at launch is digital.

Insomniac has stated Marvel’s Wolverine will be available on physical media, and Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi said he pushed Square Enix to guarantee a physical edition – though even then, players will still need to download parts of the game because of its size, since the team didn’t want to split it across multiple discs.
What it means for you
If you were waiting for a boxed copy, there’s currently nothing to preorder. Buying digital on day one is the only option, and resale or lending isn’t on the table. The good news is that hype hasn’t cooled: despite the delay that moved Phantom Blade Zero from early September to the end of October – putting it closer to GTA 6 – the game passed three million wishlists on Steam alone in September. The reveal of Donnie Yen as creative consultant and a main antagonist has only pushed interest higher.
