Mafia III Gets Free PS5 and Xbox Series Upgrade With 60 FPS

Mafia III Gets a Free Next-Gen Upgrade With 60 FPS for Its Tenth Anniversary

Updated 11 October 2026, 18:00

Mafia III launched on October 7, 2016, which means Lincoln Clay’s revenge story has just hit its tenth anniversary. 2K Games is marking the date with something owners have been requesting for years: a native current-gen version of Mafia III: Definitive Edition that finally runs at 60 FPS on consoles. Back in 2016 the game arrived with big expectations thanks to the new setting of New Bordeaux and a different take on the series’ criminal underworld, but it ended up being remembered mostly for technical problems and a repetitive mission loop built around dismantling Sal Marcano’s rackets.

Free upgrade for PS4 and Xbox One owners

If you own Mafia III: Definitive Edition digitally or on disc for PS4 or Xbox One, you get the native PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series version at no extra cost. The same applies if you own the game as part of the Trilogy Pack or the Omert\u00e0 Collection. The headline feature is 60 FPS support, which the console releases never had before.

There is one important catch you should know about before you uninstall anything. Save files do not transfer between the old and the new version, so you have to start Lincoln’s story from scratch. Trophies and achievements you already earned do not carry over either.

80% discount until October 22

If you have never played it, 2K has cut the price by 80% until October 22. The sale is running on Steam, Xbox and PlayStation storefronts alike. Bought separately, the new version costs $29.99, which the discount drops to $5.99.

What the new patch fixes

The anniversary work is not limited to consoles – a new update landed on PC as well. According to 2K, it addresses:

  • imperfections in the lighting system
  • bugs that could make it impossible to finish the story
  • NPC behavior in certain missions that could block your progress
  • smaller user interface and gameplay tweaks (do not expect a full redesign)

PC players get two extra quality-of-life changes. Windowed mode should now behave correctly in multi-monitor setups, and the settings menu includes new frame rate caps at 120, 144, 180 and 240 FPS.

Why 2K came back to the third game

Mafia III has a rough reputation in some regions – on OpenCritic it sits at an overall score of 66 with just 27% of critics recommending it. Internationally, though, it did considerably better, and in the United States it was more popular than the previous entries. The game passed 4.5 million copies in its first week, and data from March 2020 put lifetime sales above seven million. That is a solid reason to keep it alive on modern hardware.

And what about Mafia II?

Mafia: Definitive Edition received a comparable PS5 and Xbox Series X/S update back in August, which leaves Mafia II as the only entry in the series without its own next-gen port. Before the announcement, ESRB listings surfaced pointing to a similar release for Mafia 2: Definitive Edition, and they were pulled shortly afterwards. FAQ

Do I have to pay for the PS5 or Xbox Series version?

No. If you own Mafia III: Definitive Edition on PS4 or Xbox One, digitally or physically, the native current-gen version is free. The same goes for owners of the Trilogy Pack and the Omert\u00e0 Collection.

Can I carry my save file over?

No. Saves do not transfer between the old and the new version, so you need to start the game again from the beginning.

What about my trophies and achievements?

Those do not transfer either. Anything you unlocked in the previous version stays there.

How much does the game cost right now?

The standalone price is $29.99, and the 80% discount brings it down to $5.99. The sale runs until October 22 on Steam, Xbox and PlayStation stores.

Did PC players get anything?

Yes. The same update fixes lighting issues, progression-blocking bugs and NPC behavior, improves windowed multi-monitor support, and adds frame rate caps of 120, 144, 180 and 240 FPS.
