Daenerys returns in 2027: Game of Thrones: War for Westeros brings back the original cast

If you have been missing the faces from the original Game of Thrones, you finally have a date to circle. Daenerys Targaryen is coming back to the franchise in 2027 – not on television, but in a real-time strategy game. PlaySide is building Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, and the characters in it look the way you remember them from the original series, not from the prequels.

That is a meaningful difference. House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms have both landed well, but as prequels they can’t put familiar faces on screen. War for Westeros takes the opposite route and leans directly on the cast you know.

Four factions, one continent

War for Westeros is planned to launch in 2027 with a single-player campaign plus multiplayer battles, and you pick from four main factions:

  • House Stark – led by names like Jon Snow and Robb Stark
  • House Lannister – commanded by Tywin and Jaime Lannister
  • House Targaryen – headed by Daenerys Targaryen
  • The Night King – a faction of its own, with the Night King himself in charge

Daenerys won’t be marching alone either. Just like in the show, she has dragons at her side, which gives her a serious edge on the battlefield.

Rewriting the history of Westeros

The core pitch is simple: you get to rewrite how the war for the Seven Kingdoms ended. Nothing is locked in place, so a faction that fell apart on screen can end up ruling everything in your campaign. The gameplay shown so far points to a fairly traditional, solid RTS structure – armies, factions and control of the map rather than a story you only watch.

You can already wishlist the game on its Steam page. If you want to keep an eye on everything happening around the license, we collect it all in our Game of Thrones news hub.

And what about Daenerys on screen?

Warning: the following paragraph contains major spoilers for Game of Thrones.

A return to television is unlikely, but not flat-out impossible. HBO is moving ahead with a sequel series centered on Arya Stark, and although Jon Snow stabs Daenerys at the end of the original show, the franchise has already shown that characters can come back from the dead. The last thing we see is Drogon flying away with her body – so a resurrection isn’t formally off the table. Just don’t plan your calendar around it; the Arya series is still years out.

In the nearer term there is the final season of House of the Dragon, at least a couple more seasons of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and a movie about Aegon’s Conquest in active development.
