Sony has opened pre-orders for the God of War Laufey Collector’s Box, and the announcement immediately hit a sore spot: for $149.99 you get a pile of physical collectibles, but no copy of the game. The reveal went out through the PlayStation UK account and the PlayStation Blog, and the reaction in the replies has been overwhelmingly negative.
What’s actually inside the box
According to the listing on the official PlayStation store, the Collector’s Box contains:
- a mini artbook,
- a 51-card Oracle Deck,
- a light-up resin statue of Faye, the protagonist of God of War Laufey.
Pre-orders are live now and sales are limited to one box per person. What Sony hasn’t said yet is whether a more traditional Collector’s Edition – one that would include the game – is still coming alongside the Digital Deluxe and this box.
Why fans are comparing it to Ragnarok
The frustration makes more sense once you look back. The God of War Ragnarok Collector’s Edition shipped with a 16-inch Mjölnir replica, a dice set, Vanir Twins carvings, a stack of digital extras and, crucially, a printed voucher for the full game. Next to that, the Laufey box looks thin, and the missing game is the part people keep pointing at. If you want the full rundown of editions and release details, we covered the Laufey pre-order options separately.
Not an isolated case
This is becoming a pattern across the industry. Diablo 4 sold a Collector’s Box full of physical items including the Candle of Creation for close to $100 without a copy of the game. Borderlands 4 announced an ECHO-1 Edition, which Gearbox later clarified had initially been mislabeled as a Collector’s Edition. And with GTA 6, every edition does include the game – but even physical copies ship with a download code instead of a disc.
What it means for you
If you’re planning to pre-order, read the fine print. Buying the Collector’s Box alone leaves you without the game, so you’d need to add the standard or Deluxe Edition on top – the Deluxe comes with armor sets for Faye and Phranque plus an in-game resources pack. That pushes the real cost well past the $149.99 sticker.
The timing doesn’t help either. God of War Laufey has been drawing criticism ever since it was announced at the June 2026 State of Play, including from the former Last of Us director, and Sony is also fielding pushback over its plan to end physical disc production by 2028. Still, pre-orders that opened on September 29 reportedly went well. More coverage of the series is collected in our God of War news hub.
