CS2 is free to play, but you need Prime Status for Premier and FACEIT. It costs $14.99 (€13.29 on the Czech Steam store) and you pay once; it is not a subscription. This guide covers what Prime gives you, how Valve Anti-Cheat works, why a VAC ban is permanent and cannot be appealed, and what Valve says about Trust Factor. Prices and rules apply as of 19 October 2026 and come from Steam and Steam Support.
What Prime Status is and what it costs
The game itself is free on Steam. Prime Status is a paid account upgrade that you buy once and keep for good.
| Item | As of 19 October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Game price | free |
| Prime Status Upgrade in USD | $14.99 |
| Prime Status Upgrade on the Czech Steam store | €13.29 |
| Payment type | one-time purchase, not a subscription |
| Prime from CS:GO | still valid in CS2, no need to buy it again |
If you already had Prime in CS:GO, there is nothing else to do. Your account and Prime carried over to CS2. You can buy Prime directly on the CS2 Steam page.
What Prime unlocks
You can play without Prime, but with limits. Prime Status gets you the following:

- Matches with other Prime players – in ranked games you are mostly matched with players who also have Prime.
- Drops – you receive item and case drops.
- Premier – the CS Rating mode is only for Prime players. How rating and seasons work is explained in our guide to ranks and Premier.
- FACEIT – to link CS2 with FACEIT you need Prime Status. Players with few hours in CS also have to verify their identity. The steps are in our article on FACEIT and servers.
How VAC works
VAC (Valve Anti-Cheat) is an automated system that looks for cheats on players’ computers. If you connect to a VAC-secured server with a detected cheat, you are banned from playing that game on VAC servers.
A few things players often mix up:
- A server admin cannot give you a VAC ban.
- Hardware and driver updates, such as graphics drivers, do not trigger a VAC ban.
- VAC bans third-party modifications and software, not game settings. The console commands and launch options in our console commands guide are not cheats in the VAC sense.
The full description is on Steam’s help page Valve Anti-Cheat System.
A VAC ban is permanent and cannot be appealed
Steam makes no exceptions here. A VAC ban is permanent, there is no appeal and Steam Support will not remove it, however you ask. If a ban was issued by mistake, Valve removes it itself after investigating. The ban also stands no matter who was using the account at the time, so “my friend was playing” does not work.
A ban can also hit other accounts tied to the same phone number. Do not add your number to accounts that are not yours.
Valve has reversed mistaken bans in bulk before, for example in December 2023 and after Season Four launched in January 2026. If you did not cheat and still got banned, your best option is to wait for the investigation. Writing to Steam Support will not lift the ban.
What you can still play with a VAC ban
With a VAC ban you can still play single-player games, LAN games and servers without VAC. Accounts with a VAC or game ban from CS:GO cannot play CS2 on VAC servers, though. To check which games your ban affects:
- Open Steam and go to Settings.
- Switch to the Account tab.
- Under VAC Status, click “Click here for details”.
Everything else is on the help page I’ve been VAC banned.
What a ban does to your skins
A VAC ban, a cooldown or an Overwatch ban in CS2 ends your access to the CS2 store, to trading CS2 items and to drops. How the store, Trade Protection and holds work is covered in our CS2 skins guide.
How to report a cheater
If you suspect someone in your match is cheating, report them. Steam Support describes the process in its article Reporting suspected cheaters. Keep reports factual and only report players you are genuinely sure about.
Trust Factor: what we know
Trust Factor is a system carried over from CS:GO. Valve uses it to match players not only by skill but also by behaviour and Steam account data, including how much you play CS and other games on Steam and reports against you. Valve does not publish the full list of factors or your score.
So do not take guides promising a quick Trust Factor boost seriously; none of it is officially confirmed. Valve’s advice is simple: play normally and legitimately.
