Diablo 5: everything we know so far

Diablo 5 is officially announced and planned for spring 2029. Blizzard revealed it at BlizzCon on 12 September 2026, and since then we know what the story is about, which classes it starts with and how items will change. This overview sticks to what Blizzard itself has confirmed and lists separately what has not been announced yet. It reflects the state on 19 October 2026, and we will update it with every official announcement.

The story: Diablo has won

Diablo 5 starts where most games would end on a bad note. The heroes failed, Sanctuary has fallen and Diablo has won. You play as a character Blizzard calls the Heir to Westmarch, travelling with a caravan of survivors through a ruined world. The landscape is set to change procedurally.

That is a clear shift from Diablo 4, where Sanctuary still stands and its heroes are still fighting back. Our news piece on the fallen Sanctuary looks at this twist in more detail.

Diablo 5 classes

Blizzard has confirmed three classes so far and says more will follow:

  • Demon Hunter
  • Monk
  • Plague Knight, introduced by Blizzard as a new class.

How these classes play, what resources and mechanics they use, Blizzard has not described yet. If you want to try newer classes in the meantime, Diablo 4 added the Paladin and the Warlock with Lord of Hatred.

Items, sets and runewords

Itemization in Diablo 5 looks back to Diablo II. Items will have stat requirements and different sizes in your inventory, so bag space will matter again. Sets are coming back, along with runes and runewords. Diablo II veterans will recognise all of this; if you never played it, you can try these systems in Diablo II: Resurrected, which received a major update in 2026. Our D2R vs Immortal comparison has the details.

Where the developers want to take the gameplay is something we follow in our news, for example in the piece on Joe Shely’s comments.

What we do not know yet

Several of the most common questions have no official answer so far:

  • which platforms Diablo 5 will launch on,
  • how much it will cost and which editions there will be,
  • whether anything carries over from Diablo 4, such as characters, items or cosmetics,
  • the exact release date within spring 2029,
  • details on further classes.

We do not include estimates or leaks in this overview. When Blizzard announces any of the above, we will add it here and to our Diablo news.

What happens to Diablo 4

Diablo 4 is not winding down because of the sequel. Blizzard is planning more seasons, the Cult of the Dead storyline continues and War Plans will see further changes. Seasons are meant to keep running even after Diablo 5 launches, as covered in our news on seasons after launch. On top of that, the Amazon arrives in Diablo 4 in the first half of 2027 as a paid Class Pack with a bow and a spear. Blizzard has not shared the price or further details yet.

How seasons work is explained in our seasons guide. If you want to jump into Diablo 4 now, start with the beginner’s guide.

The Diablo series on Netflix

BlizzCon also confirmed that Blizzard and Netflix are working on an animated Diablo series. There is no premiere date or further detail yet. Blizzard’s official summary of the Diablo 5 reveal is in its announcement article.
