GTA 6 lands on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026, and the PC version still has no official date. According to former Rockstar North technical director Obbe Vermeij, the wait might be far shorter than the almost two years PC players had to sit through with GTA 5 – and the reason is generative AI.
What Vermeij actually said
Vermeij argues that if he were in Rockstar’s position today, he would worry that someone takes the PS5 version and uses AI to convert it into a PC build. In his words, such a conversion wouldn’t match Rockstar’s own effort, but it could still hurt sales. That’s why he wouldn’t be surprised if the studio tried to bring the console and PC releases closer together.
He also admits he doesn’t see a reliable way to defend against it. A company the size of Take-Two can put lawyers on the case, and with a game as massive as GTA 6 the AI output probably wouldn’t be great anyway. His bigger point is about how the rules changed: making a game used to require so much work that ripping it off simply wasn’t realistic. That barrier, he says, is gone, and the next couple of years will show how it plays out.
Why the worry isn’t hypothetical
People are already using AI to rebuild popular games and push them onto platforms where they were never meant to run – Minecraft playing inside X/Twitter, or mashups of Minecraft and Elden Ring. Rockstar’s own Grand Theft Auto 5 recently turned up playable in a browser before it was taken offline, and we covered that browser version of GTA 5 in detail. Anthropic has since shipped an update for Claude that makes it harder to use the model for generating game clones.
There’s a second front too: PS5 security. Sony appears to be playing Whac-A-Mole with hackers trying to jailbreak the latest firmware ahead of GTA 6’s launch. If a jailbreak appears for the firmware GTA 6 requires, the game could be pirated on PS5 – and potentially moved to PC from there.
What it could mean for your PC release
In October, a report claimed Rockstar is planning the GTA 6 PC release for the first quarter of 2027. Neither Rockstar nor parent company Take-Two commented on it. If that holds, PC players would be waiting months rather than years after the console debut.
The PC launch may also be tied to GTA 6’s multiplayer, which the community is already calling GTA Online 2 even though Rockstar hasn’t confirmed an online mode at all. Twitch boss Dan Clancy said last month that the multiplayer – whatever it ends up being called – will arrive next year.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has stayed vague on PC, always pointing back to Rockstar for announcements. In May he told Bloomberg that Rockstar always starts on console, because with a release like this you’re judged on how well you serve the core audience first. Red Dead Redemption, GTA 5, LA Noire, Max Payne 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2 all followed the same pattern. Even so, GTA has an enormous active PC base built around GTA Online and role-play servers.

A former technical director at Rockstar North. He believes the studio has reason to shorten the gap between the console and PC releases because of AI-made ports.
Vermeij’s argument is that development used to be so labor-intensive that copying a game wasn’t feasible. With generative AI, someone could try to turn a console build into a rough PC version, which could cut into official sales.
Rockstar still hasn’t confirmed an online mode. Twitch boss Dan Clancy said the multiplayer will launch next year, and fans are calling it GTA Online 2 in the meantime.
