Since launching on 12 March 2026, John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando has received two major free updates: Urban Blight (patch 2.0, 18 June 2026) and Retrieval (update 3.0, 2 September 2026). They line up with the summer and fall entries on the official 2026 roadmap. No further update has been announced yet. This page covers what each update added, which roadmap features are still missing and where to follow the news. We update it after every major patch.
Current status
The latest version is hotfix 3.1 from 14 September 2026, which fixed issues in Retrieval mode, with bots and with crashes. The latest major update is Retrieval from 2 September 2026. The developers haven’t officially announced the next update, and the roadmap only says “To be revealed soon” for anything after fall 2026. Status as of 26 September 2026.
2026 roadmap: what was promised and what shipped
The official 2026 roadmap is an image published by Focus Entertainment. The developers note that it’s for reference only and may change. Here’s how it compares with what actually came out:
| Period | Promised | Shipped | Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summer 2026 | Free Update 1 + Cosmetic Pack 1 | Urban Blight (2.0) + Cosmetic Pack 1 | 18 June 2026 |
| Fall 2026 | Free Update 2 + Cosmetic Pack 2 | Retrieval (3.0) + Cosmetic Pack 2 | 2 September 2026 |
| Later | To be revealed soon | nothing announced yet | – |
The summer plan listed challenges for unlocking cosmetics, a new map, a new enemy, four primary weapons, a new secondary, heavy and melee weapon, and two vehicles. The fall plan listed ammo mods, another difficulty level, new defensive setups, a new enemy, four primary weapons, a new heavy and melee weapon, and new consumables. Both paid DLCs (Cosmetic Pack 1 and 2) are part of the Bloody Pass. More on that in editions and price.
Retrieval Update (3.0, 2 September 2026)
The developers call it their second big content update. It launched alongside Cosmetic Pack 2, which makes it the Free Update 2 from the fall slot on the roadmap.
Retrieval mode
A new game mode where you collect six relics and then make it to an extraction point. The mode also features safe domes and Sludge Nodes. It’s playable on four maps: Church of the Damned, High Octane, Impasse and Demon Bait.
New enemy and weapons
- Goblins: small enemies that come in threes, go after the same target and revive each other as long as one of them is still alive.
- Le Clairon: a bullpup assault rifle with three firing modes.
- Flamethrower: a new heavy weapon.
- Thunderstick: a new melee weapon.
- Saw Trap: a defensive trap you build with Spare Parts.
Other changes
- Dash: a quick 3-meter dash.
- PC local servers: host a private game with friends on your own computer. Still experimental, with higher CPU, RAM and connection demands for the host.
- Vehicles: winches and the option to carry cargo on the vehicle.
- Bots: they start with perks and weapons based on difficulty, heal players below 70 HP and can use a Sludge Seed. Details in our guide to playing with bots.
- HUD customization, Trials Season 2 and support for AZERTY and QWERTZ keyboards.
The paid Cosmetic Pack 2 added mutated character skins, bone weapon skins, a bloody charm, vehicle skins featuring the Sludge God’s face, a new horn, a title and an icon.
Urban Blight (2.0, 18 June 2026)
The first major free update, matching Free Update 1 from the summer slot on the roadmap.
- Urban Blight mission set in the ruins of Rockbridge, with sewers and apartment blocks.
- Hornet: a flying enemy that grabs a player and drops them.
- Six weapons: Salvo MGL, Heartstopper Carbine LAC, Precision BAR Gen 1, Thundershot OEP, Obsidian OEP and Sludgebane.
- Vehicles: the Thrasher APC and the Forklift.
- Challenges: daily, weekly and seasonal, found at Leon’s terminal.
- PROS Save Transfer: cross-progression between platforms. More in our crossplay guide.
- Bots can now pull players out of cocoons.
The Thunderbolt OEP beam rifle was unlocked for everyone on 2 July 2026 after the community completed a challenge. Cosmetic Pack 1 released alongside the update.
Smaller patches since launch
- Patch 1 (19 March 2026): connectivity fixes.
- Update 1.5 (2 April 2026): an ADS toggle and crash fixes.
- Patch 1.6 (30 April 2026): Insane difficulty, a Prestige rework for weapons (prestiging now only resets the weapon level, not attachments and tiers), Revival Pod respawns at 100 to 160 meters and balance changes for all four classes.
- Hotfix 3.1 (14 September 2026): fixes for Retrieval mode, bots and crashes.
A field of view slider was already in the game at launch.
What hasn’t arrived from the roadmap yet
The fall roadmap slot also mentioned ammo mods, another difficulty level and new consumables. None of these are in the Retrieval Update patch notes, and the publisher’s official announcement doesn’t mention ammo mods or a new difficulty either. The developers haven’t said when, or whether, they’ll come. Since the roadmap is for reference only, don’t count on these features for now.
Where to follow the news
Announcements and patch notes go up first on Steam News. Big updates get a Public Test Server before release. It’s a separate app in your Steam library, available to everyone who owns the game, and it usually runs for about two weeks. You can try new content there before it goes live. All missions, weapons and vehicles from updates are free for every player. Only the cosmetic DLCs cost money.
