Toxic Commando: The Stimulant Trick

Toxic Commando: The Stimulant Trick

John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando kills fast, and its permadeath rule is merciless: once you go down a second time, nobody can pick you up again. The community has found a way around it, though, and it’s not an exploit in the usual sense. It’s the Stimulant gadget, which does exactly what it’s supposed to, just with an effect that changes how you play on the highest difficulties.

What the stimulant actually does

Most gadgets, like grenades and mines, are for clearing hordes. The stimulant is for staying in the fight, and it has two key properties:

  • It gets you back on your feet from the “downed” state without waiting for anyone.
  • It resets the “weakened” status. This is the important half. Normally, going down a second time means permanent death with no way to be revived, and using a stimulant wipes that status completely.

The trick and its one condition

The condition people trip over: you have to get up before a bot or a teammate reaches you. If someone else revives you, the weakened status stays and the next time you go down is your last.

Paradoxically, the biggest obstacle is your own AI teammates. When playing solo with bots, use the stimulant right after you go down instead of waiting to see if someone comes running.

Why the Defender turns this into a build

FactorDetail
Gadget capacityat level 15 the Defender carries 5 stimulants at once
Refill cost1 unit of material refills your gadgets four times from a single crate
Crates per mapoften five or more
Practical resultroughly 25 revives per crate, dozens per mission

That’s exactly why the survival class here is the Defender, not the Medic. The Medic has an active self-revive, but it can’t chain resets of the weakened status the way a level 15 Defender with a stock of stimulants can.

How to play it

  1. Level the Defender to 15 for the five-gadget capacity. The trick works at lower levels too, just with a thin margin.
  2. Map out the crates before you dig in. Your real number of lives is set by where the crates are, not by your health bar.
  3. Carry material. One unit equals four refills, so it’s worth more than almost anything else in your inventory.
  4. Get up immediately. Every second you wait is a second in which a bot can revive you and leave you weakened.
  5. The protective dome is your reset window: it creates space where you can use the stimulant safely.

Doesn’t it ruin the game?

Partly, yes, and it’s fair to admit it. Fifty revives per mission undermine the horror atmosphere the game is built on. At the same time, for solo players on the highest difficulties it’s the only realistic way forward, because bots simply don’t react fast enough to keep you alive.

In co-op with real people you probably don’t need it. Solo, it’s the difference between finishing missions and replaying them.

FAQ

What does the stimulant do?

It gets you back on your feet from the downed state and resets the weakened status, so going down again isn’t permanent death.

Why is the Defender the best class for this?

At level 15 it carries five stimulants, more than any other class, and it pairs perfectly with equipment crates.

How many times can I get up per mission?

There’s no fixed cap. One crate and a full inventory give you roughly 25, and maps with several crates push the number into the dozens.

Does the reset work if a teammate revives me?

No. After someone else revives you, you stay weakened and going down again kills you. Only your own stimulant does the reset.

Isn’t the Medic better for survival?

Not for this. The Medic can self-revive, but only the Defender carries enough stimulants to reset the death state over and over.
