LEGO is clearing shelf space again, and this time the cut hits gaming hard. A total of 34 video game-themed sets are scheduled to leave the lineup at the end of 2026, with franchises like Minecraft, Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario, Fortnite, Animal Crossing and Horizon all losing boxes. The official discontinuation date is December 31.
The pattern is clear: this rotation mostly targets cheaper play sets aimed at kids and small single-scene kits, not the expensive display pieces collectors chase. If you’ve been eyeing a particular box, that’s the practical takeaway – the affordable ones are the ones disappearing.

What this means if you collect
The biggest hit by far is Minecraft, which loses 14 sets in one sweep. Sonic drops six, while Super Mario, Animal Crossing and Fortnite each lose four. On top of that, the generic Arcade Machine exclusive is going away too.
The other thing worth watching is minifigures. Several of the retiring boxes are the only way to get certain characters in brick form, including Horizon’s Aloy and Animal Crossing’s Blathers. Once the sets are gone from retail, the aftermarket usually decides the price – so if a specific figure matters to you, buying before December 31 is the safe route.
Not the first rotation this year
LEGO cycles products out regularly to make room for new releases, and 2026 has already seen one big gaming purge. At the end of July 2026, 20 video game-themed sets were retired, and that wave did touch premium pieces: The Legend of Zelda’s Great Deku Tree and the Pac-Man Arcade Machine both went, along with several Mario Kart kits featuring Wario, Yoshi and Piranha Plant.
New sets are still coming
The pipeline doesn’t look empty. LEGO has confirmed multiple fresh collaborations for the rest of 2026 and into 2027, including Yu-Gi-Oh and Dragon Ball Z making their LEGO debut. A Link and Epona set was also revealed to mark the 40th anniversary of Nintendo’s Zelda series. On the premium side, the LEGO PlayStation arrives in October – LEGO Insiders get early access on October 1, with wider retail availability on October 4.

FAQ
The affected sets are expected to be officially discontinued on December 31, 2026. After that date they leave LEGO’s regular lineup, though leftover stock may linger at some retailers.
Thirty-four video game-themed sets. Minecraft loses 14, Sonic the Hedgehog six, and Super Mario, Animal Crossing and Fortnite four each, plus one Horizon set and the exclusive Arcade Machine.
Not in this rotation. The changes mostly target lower-priced play sets aimed at children and smaller single-scene kits, not LEGO’s premium gaming display pieces.
Several characters only appear in the retiring boxes, including Horizon’s Aloy and Animal Crossing’s Blathers, so those are the ones fans will likely hunt for first.
Yes. LEGO has confirmed new collaborations for the rest of 2026 and 2027, including Yu-Gi-Oh and Dragon Ball Z debuts, plus the LEGO PlayStation launching in October.
