Emery Hearts: A Voxel Action JRPG Arrives on Steam This November

While the big JRPG names keep soaking up attention, a much smaller project is quietly lining up its launch. Emery Hearts is an indie action JRPG heading to PC via Steam on November 11, 2026, and if you want to try it before you commit, a demo is already available.

What Emery Hearts actually is

You play as Lug, an ordinary villager who ends up holding the fate of both humans and machines in his hands. The world is described as being on the brink of extinction, and Lug’s powers come from energy crystals and the Vital Thread, the force that binds all life on the planet together. The pitch promises “a story of legacy, mystery, and heart” – which, together with the title, makes the Kingdom Hearts inspiration pretty hard to miss.

Mechanically, this is not a turn-based game. Combat is fast, built around chaining sword attacks, magic and item usage into combos, with dodges instead of waiting your turn. Your enemies are hostile mechanoids, and you fight them with a range of weapons, skills and spells.

Progression and the world

  • Upgrade Lug’s arsenal with new items, weapons and amulets that boost your stats
  • Explore a semi-linear world where new abilities unlock previously blocked-off areas
  • Solve classic RPG puzzles that test your head as much as your reflexes
  • Take on tougher foes and find better gear as you reopen the map

That structure borrows the Metroidvania and Soulsborne approach to level design: the world doesn’t open all at once, it opens as you get stronger. Visually, Emery Hearts goes for a top-down camera, retro-style speech bubbles and a blocky voxel art style with obvious Minecraft energy. If you keep an eye on genre experiments from smaller teams, we also covered Nocturne and the feudalpunk Glasshouse on the site.

One big choice drives the whole game

The most interesting hook is a core dilemma. You’ll apparently have to decide between saving the robots at the cost of organic life going extinct, or forging a fragile balance in which “both can coexist.” The description points toward good and bad paths, which means two full playthroughs may genuinely be worth your time rather than just a formality.

Why the timing works

Kingdom Hearts 4 has been shown off plenty – Hades, Donald Duck and Goofy are confirmed to return, the original location Quadratum is in, and a long-requested Coco world has been revealed. A release window took its time, though. At D23 2026, series creator Tetsuya Nomura finally pointed at late 2027. There’s still no exact date, so a delay isn’t off the table, and even in the best case you’re looking at about a year of waiting. A smaller action JRPG with similar DNA fits neatly into that gap.
