Hogwarts Legacy spells: full list and where to learn each one

Spells in Hogwarts Legacy can’t be bought or skipped. You learn them in classes, from professor assignments and in story quests. Below is a table of the main spells with where to get them and what they do, plus Ancient Magic, the Room of Requirement spells, the Unforgivable Curses and how spell slots work. Valid on every platform as of 20 October 2026.

How you learn spells in Hogwarts Legacy

New spells come from three sources: classes, professor assignments and main or side story quests. There is no shortcut and no vendor sells spells.

Each professor teaches a different subject, and their assignments reward spells that belong to it. These names keep coming up in the table below:

  • Ronen: Charms
  • Hecat: Defence Against the Dark Arts
  • Sharp: Potions
  • Garlick: Herbology
  • Kogawa: Flying
  • Onai: Divination
  • Howin: Beasts (Care of Magical Creatures)
  • Weasley: Transfiguration

Spells you start with

During the prologue with Professor Fig you learn your Basic Cast, the Protego shield, Stupefy (a counter after a block), Lumos for light and Revelio. Revelio highlights items, enemies and interactive objects nearby. These five carry you through the opening hours, and everything else comes step by step.

Alohomora is worth a note: you keep upgrading it with moons found at Demiguise statues. The table only lists spells where independent outlets agree on how you get them. If you want to see how spells fit into the opening hours, check our beginner’s guide.

Ancient Magic

You won’t find Ancient Magic or Ancient Magic Throw in any class. You get both automatically during the troll fight on your first visit to Hogsmeade.

Room of Requirement spells

The Conjuring Spell, Altering Spell and Evanesco only work inside the Room of Requirement. You can’t use them anywhere else, so don’t expect anything from them in combat or exploration.

Unforgivable Curses

Heads up: this section reveals what Sebastian Sallow’s quests offer.

Crucio, Imperio and Avada Kedavra are optional. Sebastian Sallow offers them during his quests: Crucio in In the Shadow of the Study, Imperio in In the Shadow of Time and Avada Kedavra in In the Shadow of the Relic. You can turn each offer down and finish the game without them. In the Dark Arts Battle Arena, part of the Digital Deluxe Edition and the Dark Arts Pack, these curses are temporarily available too.

Spell slots and spell sets

You assign spells to a set of four slots. You start with one set; more spell sets are unlocked by the Spell Knowledge talents, and you switch between sets. More sets mean more spells at hand, say one set for combat and another for exploring. Our talents guide explains how talents work.

Your wand doesn’t affect spell power either, as its wood and core are purely cosmetic. More on that in our guide to houses and wands.

Tip: don’t put off professor assignments

The spells you need for treasure and Merlin Trials, such as Flipendo, Glacius or Incendio, come from professor assignments. It pays to complete them as soon as they appear. You’ll save yourself trips back to places you couldn’t open the first time.
