Developer Glass Head Dolls and publisher WINGS, together with PlayStation, have announced a release date for Prison of Husks: the low-poly soulslike arrives on PlayStation 5 and PC on January 27, 2027. If you don’t want to wait, there’s an updated PC demo you can play right now.
A painted afterlife that’s falling apart
You wake up in Lysiane, a heavenly afterlife that was originally painted by a pure heart. By the time you arrive, it’s a desolate place crumbling around you. Your soul has found a new vessel, but you’re still separated from a beloved who needs your help – and that search is the engine driving the whole journey.
Along the way you’ll face cunning dolls and decaying pigment beasts while trying to piece together what happened to the creator of this afterlife. It’s a personal goal layered on top of the usual soulslike structure, rather than a vague quest to save the world.
Combat: parries, adrenaline, pistols and magic
Fights lean on precisely timed parries, backed by an adrenaline system that boosts your damage when you play aggressively. Your loadout isn’t limited to blades either – the equipment list includes pistols and magic, so there’s room to shape a build that suits you.
Bosses are designed to push back against a single go-to strategy. Each encounter brings its own problem to solve, which encourages you to experiment with different setups instead of brute-forcing everything the same way.
Exploration built on dense, interconnected level design
Prison of Husks takes its cues from older soulslike games and their tightly woven maps. Expect:
- shortcuts that loop back into areas you’ve already cleared
- hidden corners stuffed with secrets for players who poke around
- a sketchbook where you record what you find
It’s a compact world rather than a sprawling open one, with the payoff coming from how the pieces connect. We’re tracking everything around the game on our Prison of Husks hub, so that’s the place to check for follow-ups.
The updated demo
The refreshed PC demo covers the first level and its boss fight. Compared to the previous build, it brings improvements to combat, visuals, items, enemies, and the tutorials – so even if you tried the older version, there’s a reason to go back in.
From a solo prototype to a funded release
The project started as a one-person effort by British-Indonesian developer Tammy Morley, who originally built the prototype as practice in level design, animation, programming, and game design. After the early version found an audience on itch.io, WINGS fully funded the project and helped scale that prototype into a full release.
What it means for you
If you like soulslikes with heavy atmosphere and a distinctive look rather than photorealism, this one is worth putting on your watchlist now. You can test the combat yourself in the demo before committing, and the January 27, 2027 date gives you plenty of runway – on PS5 or PC, whichever you prefer.
