How to get more FPS in Fortnite: Performance mode, Windows and 120 FPS

The quickest way to more FPS in Fortnite on PC is Performance mode, a rendering option right in the game settings. On top of that, Epic recommends a few Windows tweaks, and on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S you can switch on 120 FPS. This guide sticks to Epic’s official steps only. Accurate as of 20 October 2026.

Performance mode on PC, step by step

Performance mode sits under the Rendering Mode option. The steps from Epic’s help article:

  1. Launch Fortnite.
  2. Click the Player Icon.
  3. Select Settings, the gear icon.
  4. Open the Video tab with the monitor icon.
  5. Under the Display section, find Rendering Mode.
  6. Use the arrows to select Performance.
  7. Save with Apply.
  8. Restart Fortnite.

According to Epic, Performance mode may increase your FPS. How many frames you gain depends on your PC, so we won’t promise you a number.

If the in-game option won’t work

If you can’t enable Performance mode in the settings, Epic offers a fallback through a launch option in the launcher:

  1. Open the Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
  2. Click the three dots next to Fortnite and select Manage.
  3. Toggle on Launch Options.
  4. Add -FeatureLevelES31.

What Performance mode does and who it’s for

Performance mode lowers the game’s visual quality to ease the load on memory, CPU and GPU. It’s aimed at machines that meet the minimum requirements, and according to an update to Epic’s article it works in all Fortnite modes, see our overview of Fortnite game modes.

For older machines, Epic recommends running the game from an SSD or having at least 6 GB of RAM. A dedicated graphics card isn’t required, Epic says, but it will help. Whether your PC can handle Fortnite at all is covered in Fortnite system requirements.

Windows settings recommended by Epic

Epic has a separate guide for low FPS, frame drops and stuttering on PC. Restart your PC after making the changes.

Use the high-performance GPU for Fortnite

  1. Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
  2. Turn on Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling, if it’s available. Windows may ask for a restart.
  3. Under the custom options for apps, select Browse and add FortniteClient-Win64-Shipping.exe.
  4. In its Options, choose High performance and save.

Delivery Optimization

In Windows Update, open Advanced options → Delivery Optimization and turn off Allow downloads from other PCs.

Power plan

Type Power into the Windows search bar, open Power & battery (or Power & sleep), go to Additional power settings and select High performance. On some devices it’s called Best performance.

Game Mode and Xbox Game Bar

In Settings → Gaming, turn on Game Mode and turn off Xbox Game Bar.

Save space by dropping HD textures

For players running Performance mode, Epic offers one more tweak: removing the High Resolution Textures. According to Epic, that saves over 15 GB:

  1. In the Epic Games Launcher, open Library.
  2. Click the three dots next to Fortnite and select Options.
  3. Untick High Resolution Textures.
  4. Confirm with Apply.

120 FPS on PS5

  1. On your PS5, go to Settings → Save Data and Game/App Settings → Game Presets.
  2. Select Performance Mode instead of Resolution Mode.
  3. Open Fortnite and go to Settings → Video.
  4. Toggle 120 FPS mode to ON and click Apply.

If your TV and AV setup don’t support 4K at 120 Hz, enabling Performance Mode might affect your in-game output resolution.

120 FPS on Xbox Series X|S

  1. Close Fortnite completely.
  2. On your Xbox, go to Settings → General → TV & Display Options.
  3. Check 4K TV Details to see whether your TV supports 120 Hz.
  4. Under Refresh Rate, select 120 Hz.
  5. Open Fortnite, go to Settings → Video, toggle 120 FPS mode to ON and click Apply.

When the 120 FPS option is missing

If you don’t see 120 FPS mode in the video settings, Epic’s help article says it isn’t available for you. Also bear in mind that with 120 FPS and Performance mode on console, Save the World is unavailable. If you play it, switch Performance mode off on your console, more in our guide to Save the World.
