Escape from Tarkov PvE Zone and offline play: can you play solo?

Escape from Tarkov PvE Zone and offline play: can you play solo?

Escape from Tarkov has no offline mode, not even for PvE. You can still play solo without strangers, though: that is what the PvE Zone is for, a co-op mode where every other PMC is controlled by AI and the only humans in your raid are the ones you bring. This guide covers what the PvE Zone does, how to get it on Steam or from Battlestate Games directly, how wipes and Prestige work in PvE, and why your purchase region does not decide which servers you play on. Everything here is valid as of 20 October 2026.

Can you play Escape from Tarkov offline?

No. Both the official FAQ and the Steam FAQ from BSG state that the game always needs an internet connection. That applies to the PvP Zone, the seasonal character and the PvE Zone alike. There is no offline version to download, and the game will not go free-to-play either: BSG dropped trial keys with the 1.0 release.

So if you want to play Tarkov alone without the stress of other players, the answer is the PvE Zone. You are online, but you will never run into a stranger on the map.

What the PvE Zone is

The PvE Zone is a co-op PvE mode with persistent progression: whatever you earn in raids stays with you, the only difference being that the other PMCs on the map are AI. You go in alone or with friends you invite yourself. Both GamesRadar+ and IGN recommend the PvE Zone as a slower way into the game without live opponents, and IGN played most of its review there because of cheaters.

The game now has three kinds of characters, each with its own progression:

  • PvP Zone – classic Tarkov against real players.
  • PvE Zone – the same game, but the other PMCs are bots.
  • Seasonal character – a separate profile on separate servers that resets when a new season starts.

What patch 1.2.0.0 changed for AI PMCs

Patch 1.2.0.0, released on 6 October 2026, reworked bot behaviour in PvE. USEC and BEAR bots now cooperate more often, are sometimes neutral towards you and fight Scavs and bosses more. Bot PMCs are also always on the map from the very start of the raid, so do not expect them to show up later.

How to get the PvE Zone and what it costs

The PvE Zone is an expansion for the base game and does nothing on its own. There are three ways to get it:

OptionStorePrice (20 Oct 2026)
Escape from Tarkov: PVE Zone (standalone)Steam€29.99
PvE Upgrade in the Expansions sectionBSG websiteprice not shown without logging in
The Unheard Steam Edition (includes the PvE Zone)Steam€189.98
The Unheard Edition (includes the PvE Zone)BSG website, Europe region€250

On Steam the expansion has its own PVE Zone page; on the BSG website it sits in the Expansions section. Since 8 July 2026 expansions are also sold in-game in the Expansions Hub for TarCoin. Expansions you buy stay with you after a wipe. How the other editions differ and why Steam and BSG prices are not the same is covered in our editions and prices guide.

Wipes and Prestige in the PvE Zone

Traditional wipes for everyone ended with the 1.0 release. Only the seasonal character resets automatically; your PvE character does not. You can still wipe your own profile manually in your account settings.

In PvE a manual wipe matters in two cases. According to the BSG FAQ, a wipe is a technical requirement for finishing the story in PvE. And for time-limited events, BSG says a PvE profile wipe is needed if you want the full experience. For how seasons and leagues work, see our guide to wipes and seasons.

Patch 1.2.0.0 also brought Prestige to the PvE Zone. It has six levels and resets only your PvE character, leaving your PvP character untouched. The idea is the same as in PvP: you meet the requirements, your progress resets and you get rewards, while keeping part of your gear and up to 50% of your skills and weapon mastery. Seasonal characters do not have Prestige.

Some things are shared across modes. The Battle Pass is free and progresses together across the season, PvP and PvE. Seasonal trader rewards, once unlocked, stay with you permanently in every mode, PvE included.

Servers and regions: where you actually play

In Tarkov, regions are about purchases, not servers. When you buy on the BSG website you buy for one region (Europe, CIS, Other, LATAM, CN), and that only affects the price and where you can launch the game. A copy bought in the Europe region launches anywhere in the world, which is why BSG tells frequent travellers to buy that version. Outside your purchase region the launcher shows error 208.

The region does not restrict servers at all. You play on whichever servers are available based on your ping. Steam and BSG website players share the same servers, so you can team up even if one of you bought on Steam and the other on the website. BSG support explains regions in its Region access article. Do not use a VPN when buying on the website; BSG explicitly advises against it.

If the launcher will not let you in or throws an error, the codes and official fixes are listed in our guide to errors and anticheat.

PvE with a friend and the EXFIL Brothers programme

The only players who join you in the PvE Zone are the ones you invite; random people cannot drop into your raid.

If you are still trying to get a friend into Tarkov, the EXFIL Brothers programme, running since 6 October 2026, is worth a look. An experienced player (Operator, account older than 7 days and level 30) invites a newcomer (Candidate, account younger than 7 days) with a link from the website. Both get +5% XP in raids together, plus rewards. The programme covers every Escape from Tarkov mode including PvE, but not Arena. The rules are summarised by BSG support. For how to start and what to avoid in your first raids, read our beginner’s guide.

FAQ

Can you play Escape from Tarkov offline?

No. The game needs an internet connection in every mode, PvE Zone included. The only way to play solo without strangers is online in the PvE Zone.

How much is the PvE Zone?

€29.99 on Steam as a standalone expansion as of 20 October 2026. On the BSG website it is listed as PvE Upgrade under Expansions, and it is included in both The Unheard Edition and The Unheard Steam Edition.

Are there other players in the PvE Zone?

Only the ones you bring. Every other PMC on the map is AI and strangers cannot join your raid.

Does the PvE Zone get wiped?

Not automatically, traditional wipes ended with 1.0. You can wipe your profile manually in your account settings, and a wipe is required to finish the story in PvE.

Does my purchase region limit which server I play on?

No. The region affects the price and where the game launches; you play on servers available based on your ping. Steam and BSG website players share the same servers.
