Fortnite Review: A Battle Royale That Keeps Changing, Not Always for the Better

Fortnite is a free-to-play game from Epic Games, best known as a 100-player battle royale with building. It came out in July 2017, and today the same name also covers a no-build mode, LEGO Fortnite, the Festival music mode, player-made islands and the co-op Save the World. In this review we tell you what Fortnite offers in 2026 and where it falls short.

A battle royale you can play for free, on any device and with anyone, plus dozens of other modes. Points off for pricier V-Bucks and modes that Epic shuts down.

What works

  • Everything playable is free; money only buys cosmetics and passes
  • Cross-play across PC, consoles and mobile with one Epic account
  • Zero Build if you don’t want to build, Reload and Blitz for shorter matches
  • Save the World has been free for everyone since April 2026

What doesn’t

  • Since March 2026 the same money buys fewer V-Bucks
  • Epic retires modes: Ballistic, Festival Battle Stage and Rocket Racing are gone
  • The shop and seasonal passes push you toward regular spending
  • The game changes every season, so what you learned may not apply next time

What Fortnite is about

The core is Battle Royale. A hundred players drop onto an island, grab weapons and materials, and the Storm keeps shrinking the playable area until one winner is left with a Victory Royale. What sets Fortnite apart from other battle royales is building: in the middle of a firefight you turn the materials you’ve gathered into cover, a ramp or a whole tower.

If you don’t want to build, you play Zero Build. Epic launched it on March 29, 2022; instead of building you get a recharging Overshield, and you gain height with Ascenders or by mantling up ledges. Battle Royale also has a Ranked variant with a ladder that goes up to Unreal.

Modes beyond battle royale

Reload is a faster variant for 40 players where you come back after being eliminated as long as your team is still alive. Blitz Royale drops 32 players onto a smaller map with no building. LEGO Fortnite Odyssey is building and survival with LEGO bricks, and Brick Life is a social city game. In Fortnite Festival you play well-known hits in a band, and in Creative you launch islands built by players. Our overview of every mode is in the Fortnite game modes article.

Since April 16, 2026, Save the World is free too, the co-op PvE campaign Fortnite started with in 2017. You play it alone or with up to three friends, build traps and forts against monster hordes and level heroes from four classes. It isn’t available on phones or the original Switch, though. More in our Save the World free-to-play article.

What critics praise and what bothers players

On Metacritic, Fortnite has the most critic reviews on PS4: 78 from 18 reviews. The PC version has 81, Switch 83, Switch 2 84 and Xbox One 85. GamesRadar+ wrote in 2019 that nobody expected Fortnite to stay popular for so long, but the game keeps adapting and holding its spot at the top of the battle royale ladder. Trusted Reviews praised combat and construction fundamentals strong enough to sustain weeks and months of play. Most reviews on Metacritic date from 2017 to 2019, though, and today’s Fortnite is a different game.

Players on Metacritic are far cooler: the user score for the PS4 version is 5.2 out of 10 from more than 3,600 ratings. We don’t count that in the score, since Fortnite isn’t on Steam and we rely on critic scores. The complaints that still hold are about money and about Epic not only adding modes but also removing them. Ballistic and Festival Battle Stage ended on April 16, 2026, and Rocket Racing on October 1, 2026.

State of the game in 2026

The current season is Override, Chapter 7 Season 4, with a Battle Pass that includes Sonic the Hedgehog among others. It ends on November 1, 2026, Eastern Time. Next to the main map, Fortnite OG runs separately with the original map and its own pass. What the season brought is covered in our current Fortnite season article.

Price, V-Bucks and passes

Downloading and playing is free. You pay with V-Bucks, which buy cosmetics, emotes and passes. Since March 19, 2026, the Battle Pass costs 800 V-Bucks, and finishing it gives you back up to 800 V-Bucks for the next one. At the same time Epic cut the number of V-Bucks per pack: $8.99 now gets you 800 V-Bucks instead of 1,000. Fortnite Crew is a monthly subscription with the passes, 800 V-Bucks and a monthly pack; the price depends on your country. Details are in our articles on the Battle Pass and Crew and V-Bucks prices.

Platforms and cross-play

Fortnite runs on PC through the Epic Games Store, on PS5 and PS4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, Switch and Switch 2, Android and iPhone, and in the cloud. Cross-play works across all platforms, and your progress and purchases are tied to your Epic account. On PC the minimum is 8 GB of RAM and Intel HD 4000 graphics; Epic recommends 16 GB of RAM and a GTX 960. More in our system requirements article.

If a child is playing, Epic offers parental controls through the Epic account: chat limits, a PIN for payments, daily playtime limits and age ratings for individual islands. Reload and Blitz Royale are rated PEGI 12. How to set it all up is in our Fortnite parental controls guide.

Who Fortnite is for (and who it isn’t)

It suits you if you want fast, free multiplayer action you can play with friends on anything. If you don’t want to build, there’s Zero Build; if you don’t want to shoot, there’s LEGO, Festival or player-made islands.

Skip it if you can’t stand games that change every season and nudge you toward the shop.

Verdict: Is Fortnite worth it?

Yes, it’s free and still one of the best battle royales around. We give it 8/10.

Fortnite is built on fast battle royale with or without building, cross-play on every device and a huge range of modes that now include LEGO and music. Critics rate it well on every platform. Points off for pricier V-Bucks and for modes that Epic switches off after a few years.

Is Fortnite free?

Yes, downloading and playing is free, including Save the World since April 16, 2026. You only pay for V-Bucks, which buy cosmetics, emotes and passes. The Battle Pass costs 800 V-Bucks, and $8.99 buys 800 V-Bucks.

Can I play Fortnite without building?

Yes, in Zero Build. Instead of building you get a recharging Overshield. Blitz Royale for 32 players has no building either.

What platforms is Fortnite on?

This review is based on critic scores on Metacritic and on official information from Epic Games. Fortnite isn’t on Steam, so Steam player ratings don’t factor into the score. Information verified on October 21, 2026. All our guides to the game are on the Fortnite hub.
