You can download Fortnite almost anywhere: on PC, on both generations of PlayStation and Xbox, on Switch and Switch 2, and on mobile. Mobile has a catch, though, and it’s why things work differently in the EU than in the rest of the world: on iPhone, Fortnite isn’t installed from the App Store. PC: Epic Games Launcher only
You won’t find Fortnite for PC on Steam or anywhere else. It’s downloaded exclusively through the Epic Games Launcher, which you install from the Epic Games website. Creating an account is free, and it’s the same account you’ll use on console and mobile, so your progress and purchases carry over.
Mobile: why it’s not on the App Store
This is the only part that isn’t straightforward. Apple removed Fortnite from the App Store in 2020 after a dispute with Epic Games, and it never came back. What changed the situation was the EU Digital Markets Act (DMA), which required Apple to allow third-party stores on the iPhone.
For players, that has a concrete consequence: you can install Fortnite on iPhone if you’re in the EU, but you first have to install the Epic Games Store and download the game from there. Outside the European Union this route doesn’t work.
On Android it’s a bit more direct and works worldwide, also through the Epic Games Store. In both cases your phone will warn you several times during installation that you’re installing an app from outside the official store. For this particular route, that’s expected.
If you have nothing to play on
You can stream Fortnite from the cloud. It works on GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud Gaming and Amazon Luna. It’s a usable option if you have a weaker PC or want to play on a device the game doesn’t run on natively. Keep in mind that the trip to the server adds to your usual latency, and in a shooter you’ll feel it.
How much space you need
Fortnite changes every season and so does the install size, so any specific number goes out of date before you finish reading it. Rule of thumb: expect tens of gigabytes and leave some headroom, because the updates before a new season tend to be big.
