In Once Human you always play with other people around you, but not quite the way you might picture a classic MMO. In this article you’ll learn how server and region selection works, how PvE and PvP scenarios differ, whether it makes sense to look for a server for your own country and how you actually end up on the same server as your friend. The information is based on official statements from the Starry studio about the console release and patches 3.0.4 and 3.0.5 (August–September 2026).
Is Once Human an MMO?
Not in the sense you probably have in mind when you think of World of Warcraft or a similar game with one persistent world for thousands of players. Once Human is a multiplayer open-world survival game where you play on a specific server within a specific scenario: a themed run with its own map, rules and length, lasting anywhere from a few days to several weeks. According to the developers, it’s a game where you “explore, build, secure Deviants, clear dungeons and take part in various scenarios and events”, in both PvE and PvP form.
So: yes, it’s multiplayer, fully cross-platform between PC, mobile and, since August 2026, consoles. Calling it an MMO isn’t really accurate though; “survival with shared servers that reset in cycles” describes it better. The game is also free-to-play, and you only pay for cosmetics and the battle pass, nothing that affects balance.
How servers work: regions, scenarios and signing up
Servers are split by region: North America, South America, Europe, Japan, South Korea, Southeast Asia and Hong Kong/Macao/Taiwan. Each region runs on its own physical data center because of latency, which is why players from different regions never meet on the same server. A player from North America can’t get onto a server in Asia and vice versa.
Within a region you then pick a scenario, a themed run with its own map and rules. Each scenario has several specific servers running under it (for example Manibus-X0282 or E_Dream-X0101), and more open depending on demand. That’s why people ask about “EU servers” in the plural: in Europe there are dozens running at any one time, split by scenario and by when they were created.
New servers don’t open continuously but in regular waves. Under the schedule in effect since late August 2026, new servers for the Manibus, Endless Dream, The Way of Winter and Deviation: Survive, Capture, Preserve scenarios open in Europe, North America and Southeast Asia every Saturday at 8:00 server time, while the PvP scenario Evolution’s Call opens only on the 1st and 15th of each month. In the other regions (South America, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong/Macao/Taiwan) the same 1st-and-15th rhythm applies, and only Prismverse’s Clash opens weekly everywhere alike.
Sign-up for a new server closes 24 hours before it opens. After the deadline you either have to sign up once the server has launched or wait for the next wave. Patch 3.0.5 (2 September 2026) also shortened the so-called “sign-up lock” to 4 hours, which according to the developers gives you more time to sign up for the server you prefer.
PvE or PvP server?
Choosing a server type is really choosing a scenario. Every scenario is either purely PvE or purely PvP:
| Type | Scenario | Who it’s for |
|---|---|---|
| PvE | Manibus (Novice) | complete beginners, learning the mechanics |
| PvE | Manibus | players with some experience, building strength |
| PvE | The Way of Winter | players looking for a tougher survival challenge |
| PvE | Endless Dream | co-op fights against strong enemies across the server |
| PvE | Deviation: Survive, Capture, Preserve | Deviant collectors and Deviant battles |
| PvP | Evolution’s Call | group battles for territory in a Warband |
| PvP | Prismverse’s Clash | two factions fighting over Prism Deviants and energy |
On a PvE server you don’t have to worry about someone raiding your base; you focus on the world, bosses and Deviants. On a PvP server, on the other hand, you also fight other players and Warbands over territory and resources, which means higher risk but also faster access to competitive rewards. The developers themselves recommend that complete beginners start on Manibus (Novice), the PvE scenario built specifically to introduce you to the game.
You make the choice every time you sign up for a new scenario, so PvE and PvP don’t have to rule each other out forever, just not for a character you’re already playing on your current server.
European servers and country-specific servers
If you’re wondering whether Once Human has a server for your country, the answer is clear: no. European countries such as Germany, France, Poland or the Czech Republic all fall under the Europe region, and they share the same physical data center and the same server list, with no split by language or country. So “EU servers” doesn’t mean one server for all of Europe but a whole group of servers running in parallel across scenarios, and the region makes no distinction by player nationality.
This also ties in with the game’s languages. The console and PC versions support English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Russian and Chinese. Players from all over the continent play on the same European servers whichever of these languages they use, so don’t expect a separate server for a single country.
Playing with friends: invitation code and a shared server
To meet up with a friend in the game, you both have to meet two conditions: be in the same region (you can check it in the top right corner of the login screen) and have finished the opening tutorial section, which unlocks the social menu.
Steps according to the official FAQ:
- In the scenario selection menu, choose “More Servers” and find the specific server under that scenario. Your friend can tell you its name from their character info.
- If the server is full, you need a Special Invitation Code. After logging in with their character, your friend generates it on their character card and sends it to you outside the game.
- If you’re already playing somewhere else and the scenario hasn’t ended yet, you can leave your current server once for free (Scenario – Scenario Description – Leave Scenario) and sign up for your friend’s server. Once the scenario reaches its rest phase, switching is even easier: you just sign up directly for their server.
Older guides described a similar system called “Friend Invitation Code” that gave rewards (currency, skins) for inviting a new player. Current official sources from 2026 talk about the Special Invitation Code mainly as a way to get onto a full server, not as a referral program. Why Once Human has no single universal list of promo codes is explained in the article on Once Human codes.
Hive and Warband
Besides a temporary team (party), Once Human offers two larger forms of cooperation:
- Hive: a smaller group, a step between a party and a Warband. It makes traveling the map together and sharing rewards from clearing events easier.
- Warband: a larger organized group, key mainly for the PvP scenario Evolution’s Call, where Warbands fight other Warbands directly over border resources and territory.
The capacity of both structures (older guides listed up to around 8 players for a Hive and up to 50 for a Warband, with founding requiring a resource called Cipher) is neither confirmed nor refuted by current official sources for version 3.0.5. When deciding what to set up, let your goal guide you: do you just want easier travel and sharing with a group of people you know? A Hive is enough. Aiming for PvP and territory battles in the Evolution’s Call scenario? You need a Warband.
Changing servers and moving your character
During a single scenario you can’t freely change servers, only move between worlds (instances) within the same server, which you do via a teleport unlocked early in the story. Moving to another server means either waiting for the scenario to end or leaving the scenario early once for free.
After a scenario ends, you have three options:
- Stay on your current server: after a 14-day rest phase it automatically merges into that scenario’s permanent server, with no loss of progress or supplies.
- Sign up for a new scenario or server: on your own or together with friends through team sign-up.
- Return to Eternaland and wait until you decide what to do next.
When you move to a new scenario, your weapons, armor, resources, medicine, Deviants and calibration blueprints are transferred to Eternaland; Energy Links are converted into Astral Sand at a set ratio. You then use Resource Inheritance Points to “pull” only selected items from your backpack into the new scenario. Cosmetics, most currencies, recipes, building blueprints and quest and event item progress carry over automatically, without spending any points.
You can’t log in on two devices at the same time; a new login signs you out of the previous device.
FAQ
Not in the classic sense. It’s a multiplayer survival game with shared servers split by scenario, not one persistent world for all players at once.
No. European countries all fall under the Europe region and share the same servers. There is no separate server for a single country.
You have to be in the same region. In scenario selection, choose “More Servers”, find their specific server and, if it’s full, ask them for the Special Invitation Code from their character card.
It’s a code your friend’s character generates after logging in, and it lets you join a server that is otherwise closed to new players because it’s at full capacity.
Yes, since the console version launched there is full crossplay between PC, mobile, PS5 and Xbox. The only exception is servers marked as console-exclusive, which you can’t join from PC or mobile.
Nothing is lost. You either stay on the server, which automatically merges into a permanent server after the rest phase, or you move to a new scenario and carry selected gear over to Eternaland using Resource Inheritance Points.
