PlayStation Trophies: How They Work

PlayStation Trophies: How They Work

PlayStation trophies come in four grades based on difficulty: bronze, silver, gold and platinum, which is the hardest. How many a game has and what it asks for is up to each developer. Earned trophies are saved on the console and only reach your PlayStation Network profile when they sync – that’s behind most cases where a trophy “didn’t unlock”. There are also plenty of numbers circulating about the system that Sony has never published, and you won’t find them here on purpose.

Four grades and what follows from them

The split into bronze, silver, gold and platinum is the only thing that holds across all games. Sony adds that the number of trophies, their grades and the conditions for earning them differ from game to game. So a platinum doesn’t mean the same amount of work in two different titles.

That leads to a habit worth building: open a game’s trophy list before you finish it. It’s the quickest summary of what the game wants from you – collecting items, a run on a high difficulty, or just finishing the story. With the titles from our list of the best PS5 games, you can spot the difference right away.

How your trophy level is calculated

Player level ranges from 1 to 999. It used to be 1 to 100, and when the new system arrived, existing levels were remapped automatically; Sony gave level 12 as an example, which converted to somewhere in the low 200s. If you remember a two-digit number next to your name, you didn’t lose anything – only the scale changed.

Your level depends on the number and grades of trophies you’ve earned. Sony said three things about the new system: you progress faster at low levels, the increments are more even, and platinum trophies count more heavily toward progress. The icon next to your level changes in tiers.

LevelIcon
1–299bronze
300–599silver
600–998gold
999platinum

Sony described the icon tiers and level range on the PlayStation Blog (checked as of 11 September 2026). The platinum icon belongs to a single level, not a tier – it’s the cap of the system.

Rarity depends on other players

Besides its grade, every trophy also has a rarity, and that doesn’t depend on difficulty but on how many players have earned it. There are four levels: Common, Rare, Very Rare and Ultra Rare. A trophy for finishing the story in a barely played game can therefore be rarer than a tough challenge in a hit everyone has played.

What Sony has never said about trophies

More numbers circulate about trophies than Sony has ever published.

  • Point values for each grade. Websites keep copying a table of points per grade along with points needed per level. Sony has never released those numbers. Every source you can trace leads to a single thread on a community forum where a user worked them out, and everyone else cites back to it. That isn’t confirmation from two sides, it’s one source copied over and over.
  • Rarity percentage thresholds. Phrasing like “ultra rare means a trophy held by under a few percent” looks precise, but Sony doesn’t publish any threshold – only the four levels based on player numbers are official. Community scales disagree, and some even have five levels including “Uncommon”, which is the PSNProfiles database’s own scale, not what the console shows.
  • Retroactive trophy unlocks. Sony doesn’t describe whether a trophy unlocks on its own for a condition you met earlier. That’s down to the specific game, not the system.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the numbers are wrong. It means any article presenting them as official hasn’t verified them.

Trophy didn’t unlock? Sync first

If a trophy popped in the game but you can’t see it on the web or in the app, start a sync to your profile manually.

  • On PS5: select your profile picture, go to Trophies, press the Options button and choose Sync Trophies.
  • On PS4: open Trophies on the function screen, press OPTIONS and choose Sync with PlayStation Network.

Sony’s current trophy page doesn’t describe how the system behaves during longer offline play, and the old PS4 and PS5 manual is no longer on its website. Forum answers aren’t an official statement, so we’re not claiming any rule about offline play here. A manual sync is the procedure Sony describes, and it’s the first thing to try – it works on the older generation too, so trophies aren’t a reason to worry about whether a PS4 still makes sense today.

A game’s trophy record can’t be deleted

You can only remove a specific game’s trophy information from your list if you haven’t earned any trophy in it yet. Games where a trophy has already popped can’t be deleted – a shelved title with one bronze trophy for the intro stays on your profile for good.

If you care about your completion percentage, you have to plan ahead. That matters most with games you’re only trying out through a subscription: how the borrowed library works is explained in free games in PS Plus, and what each membership level includes is covered in PlayStation Plus tiers.

Trophies with Share Play and a shared console

Share Play lets a friend into your game remotely, but only the host earns trophies during the session. If your friend gets you through a hard section, the trophy goes to you; if you help them, nothing gets added to your profile. The details are in our article on game sharing on PS5 and the primary console, and in practice you’ll run into this mostly with two-player games on PS5.

On a console shared within a household, everyone plays under their own account, so everyone has their own trophy profile – even if the game was bought only once.

Who shouldn’t bother chasing trophies

  • You play a few big games to the end and move on. A platinum almost always asks for the stuff you don’t enjoy too – collecting items or a second playthrough on the highest difficulty.
  • You go by rarity percentage. A low percentage only says few people have the trophy, not that it’s hard. With old titles it often just means “hardly anyone finished the game”.
  • You want a clean profile. Trying games and deleting them from the list only works until the first trophy pops.
  • You’re still choosing a console. Trophies live on PlayStation Network, so they’re tied to your PSN account, not to the box under your TV. If you’re deciding between platforms, there’s a separate PS5 vs Xbox Series X comparison for that.

FAQ

How many points is a platinum trophy worth?

Sony has never published point values for individual trophies. The numbers circulating online come from a single community thread where a user reverse-engineered them. The only official confirmation is that platinum trophies count more heavily toward level progress than the other grades.

What is the highest trophy level?

Level 999. The 1 to 999 range replaced the older 1 to 100 scale, and existing levels were remapped automatically. The icon changes in tiers: bronze up to level 299, silver up to 599, gold up to 998, and platinum belongs only to level 999 itself.

Why didn’t my trophy unlock?

Most often because it hasn’t transferred to your profile yet. Trophies are saved on the console and only reach PSN when they sync, which you can also start manually: on PS5 via your profile picture, Trophies and the Options button, on PS4 via Trophies and the OPTIONS button.

What percentage makes a trophy Ultra Rare?

Sony doesn’t publish a specific threshold. Officially there are four rarity levels based on how many players have earned the trophy: Common, Rare, Very Rare and Ultra Rare. The percentages quoted online come from community databases and don’t agree with each other.

Can I delete a game from my trophy list?

Only if you haven’t earned any trophy in it yet. Once the first one pops, the game’s record can’t be removed from the list. If you track your profile’s completion percentage, you have to decide before you launch the game for the first time.

Does the visitor earn trophies during Share Play?

No, only the host collects trophies during Share Play. Whether your friend plays a hard section for you or you play together, nothing gets recorded on their profile. For trophies, that means remote help only works in one direction.

The 1 to 999 level range and the icon tiers come from Sony’s announcement of the trophy system overhaul, in which existing player levels were automatically remapped to the new scale.
