You have to claim the free monthly games in PS Plus in the month they are on offer. After that they stay in your library and you can launch them any time as long as your membership is active, and the moment your subscription ends, you can no longer play them. How to claim a PS Plus game
Sony describes the process separately for each console generation. On PS5, go to the Games section on the home screen, open PlayStation Plus, switch to the Benefits tab, select Monthly Games, highlight the game and choose Download. On PS4, open PlayStation Plus on the function screen, go to Monthly Games, highlight the game, choose Add to Library and then Download.
The library step is the important one. Sony puts it clearly: you need to add the game to your library while it is part of that month’s offer, and then you can download and play it any time as long as your subscription is active. Claiming and downloading are two different things, and only the first has a deadline. If the offer won’t load at the end of the month, first check whether there is a PSN outage going on, because you can only claim until midnight.
You don’t have to download right away
If you’re out of storage space or not at your console, add the game to your library and put off the download. For monthly games, Sony states directly that you can download and play them any time as long as you have an active membership. Your claim doesn’t go anywhere.
You can also start the download remotely, through a web browser or the PlayStation App. There is one condition people often forget: a console has to be linked to your account. Either a PS5 you’re signed in to with your account, or a PS4 activated as your primary console, and that console has to be in rest mode with the Stay Connected to the Internet option turned on. What happens to the games when your subscription ends
This is where the word “free” stops applying. Content downloaded at no extra cost as part of the subscription, including monthly games, won’t be available after your membership ends. The terms of use say it even more precisely: games downloaded to your console are playable only as long as you have a valid subscription and the game remains in the service.

When you come back after a break
A break in your subscription isn’t final. As soon as you get PS Plus again, access to previously claimed games comes back, but only for titles that haven’t left the service in the meantime. The terms make it conditional on the game not having been removed from the service. The only way to get a removed game back is to buy it in the PS Store.
In practice, this means your library of claimed games is reliable while you’re a member and almost all of it comes back after a break. You already get monthly games with the base Essential tier, along with online multiplayer, exclusive discounts and content, cloud storage and Share Play. The game catalog is something else: it only comes with the Extra tier and works as a rotating offer, not a one-time claim. - You want one specific game for good. A month of subscription lends it to you, it doesn’t buy it. Once it expires, you can’t launch the game even from the downloaded files.
- You regularly forget to claim. The offer changes every month and a missed window doesn’t come back. If you get to your console once every six months, you’re paying for claims you won’t use.
- You don’t have a console linked to your account. Sony always describes remote downloading as downloading to a console linked to your account, not as something that works entirely without a console.
- You mostly play games that don’t require a subscription. Then the value of membership lies more in exclusive discounts and Share Play than in a borrowed library.
