The System is a blue holographic interface that only Sung Jin-woo can see, and it is the only reason he can level up in a world where nobody else can. It isn’t a metaphor or a gift. It is a program that a specific someone created with a specific purpose. And once you know that purpose, the whole story reads differently.
Spoiler warning: the answer to who created the System comes from the late part of the manhwa. If you follow the anime, the section about the Architect goes further than what has aired.
Why Jin-woo’s leveling is impossible
In the world of Solo Leveling, gates open into dungeons built like game levels: weaker enemies guard a boss, and once the boss falls, the gate closes. Chosen people awaken as hunters and receive a rank from S to E.
The key rule is that a hunter’s power is fixed at awakening. Nobody grinds their way up a rank. Jin-woo awakened as an E-rank and was supposed to stay one, which is exactly why the System is an anomaly, not just an advantage.
How he got it
Trapped in the Double Dungeon and abandoned by his own party, Jin-woo sacrificed himself so the others could survive. As he lay dying, he wished for a second chance so strongly that the System appeared and offered him the role of Player. He accepted, was revived and became the only person who can gain levels.

Who built it and why
The System was created by Kandiaru, known as the Architect. During the Monarchs’ attack on humanity, he approached Ashborn, the Shadow Monarch and the strongest Ruler, and offered him a faster way to find a suitable human vessel. In exchange, he wanted immortality.
So the System is a search and preparation tool. It exists to find a body capable of carrying Ashborn’s power and to raise it to a level where it can accept that power without falling apart. At the same time, it hid Jin-woo from the other Monarchs and Rulers while he grew, so it was as much a protection as it was a test.
Why Jin-woo of all people
There were plenty of stronger hunters. That was the problem. Those who already have power don’t know how to value it. Jin-woo wanted strength for a reason outside himself, his mother’s treatment, and he stuck with a job that nearly killed him again and again instead of giving it up.

The level 100 cap
The System isn’t endless. It ends at level 100, where it fulfills its purpose and Jin-woo has to face what he was being prepared for. At the anime’s current point he is roughly around level 50, so the machine is about halfway through its job.
How it differs from other power systems
Most shonen power comes from within: training in Dragon Ball, chakra control in Naruto, Devil Fruits and haki in One Piece. The System is purely external, a program running on Jin-woo rather than a talent he develops inside himself. That is why his growth feels like a game, and why it can be taken away, upgraded or completed in a way training never can.
