Zero Parades: For Dead Spies Heads to PS5 With a Free Director’s Cut Update

ZA/UM has announced that its spy thriller RPG Zero Parades: For Dead Spies is coming to PlayStation 5 in early November. On top of that, the studio is preparing a free Director’s Cut update that noticeably expands the game – existing owners get it on October 1, while PS5 players will have all of the Director’s Cut content included right at launch.

The game originally came out on PC in May of this year as the official next project from the team behind Disco Elysium. If you follow console news regularly, you’ll find more PlayStation coverage in our dedicated section.

What the Director’s Cut adds

According to ZA/UM, the free update brings the following:

  • 40,000 words of new material
  • a new Dramatic Encounter set at the Quisach Roundabout
  • the Backstage feature, which lets you view earlier versions of levels together with developer commentary
  • ultrawide support
  • controller remapping
  • inventory sorting
  • a photosensitivity mode

The new Dramatic Encounter takes place in the Quisach Roundabout area of Portofiro’s map. Dramatic Encounters freeze time and force you to commit to a chain of choices and skill checks, where a failure can significantly shift where the story goes. ZA/UM says that thanks to this addition, the Director’s Cut should feel tangibly different from the original release.

What Zero Parades actually plays like

Much like in Disco Elysium, you have near-total control over what kind of person the protagonist becomes. The story follows Hershel Wilk, codename Cascade, on a mission that has gone wrong – she has to assemble a team and gather everything she needs to finish the assignment without help from the Operant Bureau.

Instead of combat, situations are resolved through skill checks. You can influence their outcome in two ways: by internalizing thoughts through the Conditioning system, or by pushing Cascade’s fatigue, anxiety and delirium to the edge through the Pressure and Exertion system in exchange for another dice roll.

Why the PS5 release matters for the studio

Zero Parades launched to very positive Steam user reviews and holds an 83 critic score on OpenCritic, but commercially it fell short of ZA/UM’s expectations. The studio went through a round of layoffs over the summer as a result. The PlayStation 5 version is therefore a chance for the game to find a new audience.

The timing is also worth noting: Disco Elysium didn’t get its Final Cut until 2021, two years after release, whereas Zero Parades is receiving its enhanced version roughly six months after launch. Zero Parades wasn’t the only acclaimed narrative RPG of this kind in 2026 either – Esoteric Ebb arrived the same year.
