Legends in Apex Legends: who does what

Legends in Apex Legends: who does what

In Apex Legends you don’t pick a loadout, you pick a legend: a character with three abilities who also belongs to one of five classes and gets bonuses from it that have nothing to do with their own kit. You can aim equally well with anyone. What separates a squad that escapes a losing position from one that gets wiped there is abilities, and whether they complement each other. We’ll go through how it works, what each class adds, how many legends the game has, how they’re unlocked and how to build a trio that doesn’t trip over itself.

Three abilities and what each one is for

Every legend has three abilities, and none of them are bought: you have your kit from the moment you jump out of the dropship.

  • The passive ability is always on and you don’t trigger it: faster climbing, easier-to-read tracks, better use of med kits. Passives are most often what decides whether a legend “clicks” for you.
  • The tactical ability is what you press the most. It has a cooldown and recharges on its own. This is where a good player shows: you can use your tactical to start a fight, to back out of one, or waste it on nothing.
  • The ultimate ability charges over time and faster through in-game actions; you can speed it up with an Ultimate Accelerant picked up from the ground. For some legends it’s a game changer, for others a more convenient way to do the same thing as the tactical.

Abilities won’t win the gunfight for you. What kills you is the person holding the gun; the ability is only there to create a situation in which the gunfight almost wins itself. If you need the basics first, start with your first matches without frustration.

Five classes and what each one adds

Respawn splits legends into Assault, Skirmisher, Recon, Support and Controller. A class isn’t just a label on the character card: each one grants a bonus that applies to every legend in it. That’s why two legends from the same class partly duplicate each other in a squad, even if their kits are completely different.

Assault: carries more and gets back into the fight faster

Bangalore, Fuse, Ballistic, Mad Maggie and Revenant. The bonus revolves around ammo and getting back into the firefight: you carry more rounds and grenades and get an edge when reloading and at the moment you break an enemy’s shield. It’s the only class whose bonus directly helps you last in a long gunfight.

Skirmisher: plays for movement and care packages

Octane, Pathfinder, Wraith, Horizon, Ash, Alter and Axle. They all have some form of extra movement in their kit, plus a bonus that shows them the contents of a neutral care package from a distance, even if someone has already opened it, so you know what the other squad is running around with.

Recon: knows where the enemy is

Bloodhound, Crypto, Seer, Valkyrie, Vantage and Sparrow. They can scan a survey beacon to reveal enemy positions nearby, and they also have threat vision: when they aim down sights, enemies are highlighted for them. Information is the most valuable resource in Apex, because you almost never lose to a squad you saw coming.

Support: keeps the squad alive

Lifeline, Gibraltar, Loba, Newcastle, Mirage and Conduit. They revive faster and with health regeneration, and they can turn a fallen teammate’s deathbox into a mobile respawn beacon, so the squad doesn’t have to cross half the map. One Support in a trio is the difference between “it was two on two” and “I played the rest of the match alone”.

Controller: reads the zone and holds space

Caustic, Wattson, Rampart and Catalyst. The smallest class, and at the same time the one with the biggest influence on where the fighting happens: they build walls, gas, fences and cover, and at a ring console their bonus reveals where the next ring will move. When you know the rotation early, you reach a good position in time and don’t have to fight for it.

How many legends the game has and how to unlock them

As of Season 30 (Marked, launched on 4 August 2026), Apex Legends has 28 playable legends. The number grows slowly: Respawn doesn’t add a new legend every season and sometimes reworks an existing character instead. Season 30 is exactly that case: it brought a Bloodhound rework, not a new name on the roster.

You don’t need the whole roster, and at the start you don’t even want it. Some legends are unlocked right away on a new account, and you can open up the rest in two ways:

  • Legend Tokens: a currency earned only by leveling your account. A legend costs 12,000, and Legend Tokens can’t be bought with money.
  • Apex Coins: the paid currency. A legend costs 750 AC, a fraction of the price of a legendary skin.

So with money you’re buying speed, not power. No legend is stronger because you paid for it.

Which legends are the most beginner-friendly

Don’t look for the strongest legend in the current patch: tier lists go out of date before you finish reading them. Look for a legend where you immediately see what your ability did and that doesn’t punish you for using it at the wrong moment:

  • Pathfinder (Skirmisher). The grapple is the easiest way to learn that fights in Apex are won with height and angles. On top of that, his zipline moves the whole squad.
  • Octane (Skirmisher). Stim and jump pad. You pay for the speed with your own health, so you quickly learn when it’s worth pushing forward and when it isn’t.
  • Gibraltar (Support). The dome is the most forgiving ability in the game: when things go bad, you throw it at your feet and get a few seconds to recover.
  • Bangalore (Assault). Smoke covers a retreat, incoming fire speeds you up and the ultimate pushes enemies out of their position. None of it requires precise timing.
  • Lifeline (Support). The pick for people who want to be useful to the team before their aim starts to click.

Wraith, Horizon, Ash or Crypto, on the other hand, only make sense once you have the basics down. They aren’t harder to control, but they punish mistakes faster: a Wraith without a plan is just a player who turned invisible in the middle of three enemies and then reappeared.

How to build a trio whose abilities complement each other

Legends are picked one after another, so the last person to pick sees what the others took. Use that. There’s no universal recipe, but a trio should cover three roles:

  1. Someone who brings information. Recon or Skirmisher. Without it, the squad fights blind and rotations are guesswork.
  2. Someone who opens a fight or gets the team out of one. Assault or a mobile Skirmisher.
  3. Someone who holds space or picks the team back up. Support or Controller, the slot most often missing in ranked.

The rule is: look at what your teammates took and fill the gap. Three Skirmishers rotate beautifully and then have nobody to pick them up. That’s why it pays to know at least two legends outside your favorite class.

FAQ

How many legends are in Apex Legends?

As of Season 30 from 4 August 2026, the game has 28 playable legends in five classes: Assault, Skirmisher, Recon, Support and Controller. Respawn adds new ones gradually, so the number will grow.

Are legends free?

Some are. A new account gets a starter group, and you unlock the rest with Legend Tokens (12,000 per legend), which you earn by leveling up, or with paid Apex Coins (750 AC). Money buys you speed, not an advantage.

Which legend should I play as a beginner?

Pathfinder, Octane, Gibraltar, Bangalore or Lifeline. They all have abilities where you instantly see what happened, and none of them require precise timing or map knowledge. Save Wraith, Horizon and Crypto for later.

Can there be two of the same legend in one squad?

Not in classic battle royale. Legends are picked one after another before the drop, and everyone in the trio has a different one. You can’t switch legends during a match, so it pays to know more than one.

What are classes for when every legend has its own abilities?

A class adds an extra bonus unrelated to abilities: Recon scans survey beacons, Controller sees the next ring at a ring console, Support revives faster and Assault carries more ammo. Two legends from the same class therefore give the squad the same bonus twice.

Information verified as of 6 September 2026. The number of legends and the details of class bonuses change with bigger seasonal patches, so double-check them after a new season launches.
