Baldur’s Gate 3 classes and subclasses: all 12 classes including Patch 8

Baldur’s Gate 3 has 12 classes: Barbarian, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Sorcerer, Warlock and Wizard. Most of them offer four subclasses, the Cleric has eight and the Wizard nine, and the Paladin also has the hidden Oathbreaker subclass. Patch 8, released on 15 April 2025, added one new subclass to every class. The table below lists every subclass, the one added in Patch 8 and the level at which you choose it. This applies to PC, Mac, PS5 and Xbox as of 20 October 2026.

Every class and subclass in BG3

The subclass list below matches both the IGN and PC Gamer guides, each updated after Patch 8 came out. Names are exactly as you’ll see them in character creation. All twelve classes are also listed on the official website.

When you pick your subclass

The level at which you choose a subclass depends on the class. Larian summed it up in the Patch 8 notes like this:

  • Level 1: Cleric, Sorcerer, Paladin and Warlock. You pick the subclass right in character creation.
  • Level 2: Druid and Wizard.
  • Level 3: Barbarian, Bard, Fighter, Monk, Ranger and Rogue.

So if you want to try one of the new Barbarian or Rogue subclasses, you first have to get your character to level 3. A Cleric or Warlock has it from the very start.

What the Patch 8 subclasses brought

Larian calls Patch 8 the game’s final major patch. Alongside crossplay and Photo Mode, it added twelve new subclasses, one per class: Path of the Giant, College of Glamour, Death Domain, Circle of Stars, Arcane Archer, Way of the Drunken Master, Oath of the Crown, Swarmkeeper, Swashbuckler, Shadow Magic, Hexblade and Bladesinging.

According to the patch notes, the new subclasses come with their own abilities, animations, visual effects, summons and cantrips. Oath of the Crown also has voiced dialogue with the Oathbreaker Knight. We don’t list ability numbers here; you can read them in game in the description when you pick the subclass. For everything else the update changed, see our Patch 8 guide.

Oathbreaker: the Paladin’s hidden subclass

A Paladin starts by choosing one of four oaths: Oath of the Ancients, Oath of Devotion, Oath of Vengeance or Oath of the Crown. The fifth option is Oathbreaker. You can’t select it in character creation; it unlocks only once you break your oath during the game.

Multiclassing and difficulty

Multiclassing, meaning taking levels in more than one class on a single character, is available on the default Balanced difficulty. On Explorer it’s switched off. So if you’re planning to mix, say, Paladin and Warlock, don’t choose Explorer. How the difficulty modes differ is covered in our beginner’s guide.

Changing class and appearance

Your class choice isn’t final. You can respec for a fee with Withers, who turns up in your camp. Your appearance can be changed at the Magic Mirror, which arrived with Patch 3. You don’t have to start over if your class doesn’t click.

Primary ability by class

According to IGN’s guide, the classes rely on these primary abilities:

  • Strength: Barbarian, Fighter, Paladin
  • Dexterity: Monk, Ranger, Rogue
  • Wisdom: Cleric, Druid
  • Charisma: Bard, Sorcerer, Warlock
  • Intelligence: Wizard

Which race to pair with your class and which subraces the game offers is in our list of BG3 races.
