Resident Evil Requiem is doing extremely well – and yet one platform barely shows up in the numbers. A fresh sales analysis from Alinea Analytics breaks down where the game’s 8.5 million copies actually went, and the Xbox slice is remarkably thin: just 8.6% of total sales, which works out to roughly 731,000 copies on Xbox Series X/S.
How the 8.5 million copies split up
Requiem has already crossed $500 million in total revenue and is selling faster than any previous entry in Capcom’s survival horror series. The platform breakdown, according to the published data, looks like this:
- PS5 – 48.1% of copies, roughly 4.01 million
- Steam – 43.4% of copies, roughly 3.69 million
- Xbox Series X/S – 8.6% of copies, roughly 731,000
In other words, PlayStation and PC are essentially neck and neck, while Xbox trails both by a huge margin. If you want to keep track of where the series goes next, we cover everything in our Resident Evil news hub.
Why the gap is bigger than the hardware suggests
Nobody expected an even split. PS5 has shipped 95.3 million units as of June, a clear generational lead. Microsoft stopped reporting console sales years ago, but Xbox Series X/S is believed to sit a little above 35 million units sold – below even the Xbox One, which moved 58 million during the previous generation.
Still, an 8.6% share is noticeably lower than what the install base alone would imply. Part of that is history: Resident Evil has traditionally been much stronger on PlayStation, especially in Japan, where Xbox has never built a meaningful audience. The other question is whether Xbox owners are simply playing third-party releases on PC instead.
The GTA 6 preorder debate
The data landed a day after a report claimed GTA 6 preorders were “heavily skewed” toward PS5, reportedly setting off alarm bells inside Microsoft. Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball pushed back in a statement, saying Microsoft is “very happy with GTA 6 preorders,” that they are “breaking records for Xbox” and “matching our share of the console market.” He did not specify which records.
Ball’s argument is essentially that preorder splits simply reflect the hardware reality. The Requiem numbers complicate that: here Xbox lags well behind what its estimated console sales would predict. PS5 also has a clear tailwind ahead, since it’s front and center in GTA 6’s marketing this fall.
What it means for you
If you play on Xbox, nothing about Requiem itself changes – the game is out on all three platforms. But numbers like these shape how publishers plan future releases, marketing and support, and they arrive while Microsoft works through a major reorganization. The next console generation is the open question: Microsoft is believed to be preparing a machine that can also run games from third-party PC storefronts, which could change the math entirely.
