Rust console commands (F1) and key binds

Rust console commands (F1) and key binds

You open the console in Rust with F1, even in the main menu outside a server. Below are useful commands for regular players (respawn, connecting to a server, showing FPS, capping your frame rate, turning grass off, saving your settings) and how to set up your own keys with bind, auto-run included. Everything applies to Rust on PC as of 20 October 2026. Rust has no cheats for players, so you won’t find any here.

How to open the console

Press F1. The console works on a server and in the main menu, so you can use it to connect to a server straight away. Since April 2026, Rust has a new F1 menu. The old one could temporarily be brought back with client.legacyconsoletoggle, but Facepunch plans to remove it.

Rust is a multiplayer game with strict anti-cheat rules. None of the player commands give you an advantage. Cheating attempts end in an Easy Anti-Cheat ban, more on that in our guide to EAC errors.

Useful console commands

The table only lists commands that both the official Facepunch wiki and editorial guides agree on. Type them exactly as shown.

First-person view: a player draws a bow in a forest in Rust
First-person view with a drawn bow in a forest. Source: Facepunch Studios (Steam)
CommandWhat it does
killkills your character and sends you to the respawn screen, like “suicide” in the Esc menu
connect IP:portconnects you to a server by IP address and port (client.connect works too)
fps.limit + numbercaps your frames per second at the given value
perf 0 to perf 6shows performance stats bottom left: 1 = FPS, 2 = plus frame latency, 3 = plus RAM, 4 = plus ping; perf 0 turns it off
quitquits the game
writecfgsaves your settings and binds to the config files
grass.on false / grass.on trueturns grass off / on

After connect, type the server’s IP address and port separated by a colon. To join your own server running on your PC, use connect localhost:28015, where 28015 is the default port. How to set up such a server and how to choose between public servers is covered in our Rust servers guide.

For performance testing, the official Facepunch wiki also lists the benchmark command, which simulates parts of the game.

More commands from the official Facepunch wiki

These commands are listed on the official Facepunch wiki page of useful commands. We don’t have a second independent source for them, so we describe them only the way the wiki does:

  • find + search text – finds commands that contain the text.
  • combatlog – shows the latest damage you dealt and took.
  • console.clear and console.copy – clears or copies the console contents.
  • ping – shows your latency to the server.
  • gesture wave – a character gesture; instead of wave you can use victory, shrug, thumbsup, chicken, hurry or whoa.
  • mute + player name – mutes a player in chat locally, mutelist shows who you have muted.

Admin commands

Commands such as debugcamera (free camera) or noclip (flying) only work for admins. You can’t use them on a public server, only on your own server where you are the admin.

Binds: your own keys via the console

The bind command assigns an action to a key. You type bind, then the key, then the action. The official Facepunch wiki page on key binds lists these options:

  • Key combinations go in square brackets: bind [leftshift+k] kill.
  • Several actions at once are separated by a semicolon: bind x forward;sprint is auto-run.
  • Only while held: a + in front of an action means it only runs while you hold the key, for example bind x +forward;+sprint.
  • Cycling between actions uses the ~ character.
  • Removing a bind: bind x "" or bind x clear.

Example binds from the wiki

BindWhat it does
bind f1 consoletoggle;combatlogopens the console and shows the combat log right away
bind z ducktoggle crouch
bind f10 client.disconnectdisconnects you from the server
bind 7 chat.say "Hello everyone!"sends a message to global chat
bind 8 chat.teamsay "Hey Team!!"sends a message to team chat

Mouse buttons in binds

Mouse buttons are written like this: mouse0 left button, mouse1 right, mouse2 wheel click, mouse3 and mouse4 side buttons, mousewheelup and mousewheeldown for scrolling.

How to save binds

Once your binds are set, enter writecfg. Binds are saved to the keys.cfg file in the SteamsteamappscommonRust folder.

Default keys worth knowing

Three basic keys are worth mentioning: F1 opens the console, Tab opens your inventory and crafting, and E is for interacting, for example authorising on a Tool Cupboard (TC) or inviting a player to your team. In chat, Tab switches between global and team chat. The first steps in the game are covered in our beginner’s guide.
