According to Steam, Rust on PC needs at least a Ryzen 5 1400 or Core i5-6600, 12 GB of RAM, a GTX 1060 class graphics card and 45 GB of space, ideally on an SSD. Below you will find the minimum and recommended specs, what applies to Mac and Linux, why Rust does not run on Steam Deck and what TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are for. The details are valid as of 20 October 2026 and cover the PC version by Facepunch Studios.
Minimum and recommended PC requirements
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 11 64-bit | Windows 11 64-bit |
| CPU | AMD Ryzen 5 1400 or Intel Core i5-6600 | AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or Intel Core i7-6700K |
| Memory | 12 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | AMD Radeon RX 470, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 or Intel Arc A580 | AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 or Intel Arc B580 |
| DirectX | version 11 | version 12 |
| Storage | 45 GB, SSD highly recommended | 45 GB, SSD required |
| Network | broadband internet connection | broadband internet connection |
An internet connection is mandatory. Rust has no offline mode and is always played on servers, so without a connection there is nothing to play.
Windows 11 or is Windows 10 enough?
Steam lists Windows 11 in its requirements, but when the game moved to Unity 6 in May 2026, Facepunch stated that the lowest supported version is Windows 10 version 21H1 (build 19043). Windows 7 and 8 are no longer supported. If you are on an older build of Windows 10, update it first.
Mac and Linux
The PC version runs on Windows and macOS. On a Mac you need at least macOS Monterey (12), an Apple M1 chip, 12 GB of RAM and 45 GB of space. Apple M1 Pro, Max or Ultra with 16 GB of RAM is recommended. According to the official wiki, Linux is not supported natively.
Disk space and why an SSD matters
The game takes up 45 GB. For the minimum spec Steam says an SSD is “highly recommended”, otherwise expect longer loading times. For the recommended spec an SSD is a requirement. Facepunch support adds that Rust specifically performs better on an SSD and advises keeping Windows on an SSD with some free space. Facepunch also recommends letting Windows manage the page file automatically.

Steam Deck: Unsupported
Rust is rated Unsupported on Steam Deck. Valve’s rating gives the anti-cheat as the reason: its configuration is not supported on the Deck. The same applies to SteamOS. Do not buy Rust to play on a Steam Deck.
The console version is a separate game, Rust Console Edition by Double Eleven, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Our price guide covers the differences and prices.
TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot
Since March 2026 Rust has so-called secure servers. You can only join them with TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot enabled, and you will recognise them by the “Secure” tag in the server browser. PCs from before roughly 2016 often lack these features. According to Facepunch, more than 80% of players have TPM, but fewer than 60% have Secure Boot switched on (March 2026).
Facepunch aims to require TPM and Secure Boot on all servers. It has not announced a date yet and says it will share the timeline in its monthly devblog. In October 2026 it switched more of its own servers to secure.
How to check, according to Facepunch support:
- Run
tpm.msc. If you see “The TPM is ready for use”, you have TPM. - Run
msinfo32and find the “Secure Boot State” line. It needs to say “On”. - If something is off, enable it in your BIOS / UEFI (fTPM on AMD, PTT on Intel).
- On Windows 10 you may need to convert your system disk from MBR to GPT.
Our guide to EAC errors covers other launch problems and what support recommends. How secure servers differ from the rest is explained in our servers guide.
How to test performance: benchmark and perf
Before you start tweaking settings, open the console with F1. The benchmark command runs a simulation of parts of the game and measures how your PC performs. The perf command with a number from 1 to 6 shows a performance readout in the bottom left: perf 1 shows FPS, higher numbers add more data such as frame latency, RAM and ping. perf 0 turns the readout off again.

FAQ
45 GB on both PC and Mac. Steam highly recommends an SSD for the minimum spec and requires one for the recommended spec.
No. Rust is rated Unsupported on Steam Deck because of its anti-cheat, and the same goes for SteamOS.
Steam lists Windows 11, but Facepunch supports Windows 10 version 21H1 (build 19043) and newer. Windows 7 and 8 are no longer supported.
Not for regular servers yet. TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are required on secure servers with the Secure tag, and Facepunch wants to extend this to all servers but has not announced a date.
Not natively. The PC version officially runs on Windows and macOS.
