Four walls and a roof are not enough in Valheim. Your build has to stay up, an indoor fire must not choke you with smoke, and beds only work under certain conditions. This guide explains how to read stability colours, where to put supports, how to build a chimney that keeps the rain out, why your bed will not let you sleep and how comfort extends the Rested buff. It applies to Valheim 1.0 after patch 1.0.20 (15 October 2026) on all platforms.
Stability: what the colours mean
Every building piece has a stability value. You see it when you point at a piece with the hammer equipped: the piece lights up in a colour that shows how well it holds. From strongest to weakest:

| Colour | Meaning |
|---|---|
| blue | most stable, the foundation |
| green | still solid |
| yellow | stability dropping |
| orange | weak spot, add support |
| red | least stable piece, still standing |
Stability drops with every joint between a piece and the foundation. The more pieces between the ground and the one you are placing, the weaker it gets. That is why long beams and poles pay off: fewer joints mean a sturdier structure. Lots of short pieces stacked end to end look nice but turn red quickly.
Supports and poles
When a piece turns red, do not add another floor on top. Support it instead. A beam or pole under the weak spot improves it, for example from red to yellow. Stone pillars and the Wood Iron Pole give the most support, so use them under tall walls, big halls and wide roofs.
- Start with a foundation that sits on the ground and shows blue.
- Build walls and floors from the longest pieces you can, to keep joints down.
- Before adding another floor, sweep the build with the hammer and check where the colour drops.
- Prop up weak spots with a pole before you build anything on them.
An indoor fire without smoke
You cannot place a campfire on a wooden floor, only on dirt. If your house has a floor, remove the tile where the fire should go and build the campfire on the ground underneath.

Then comes the smoke. Without ventilation it stays in the room, hurts you and can even kill you. Leave a hole in the roof above the fire or build a chimney.
A chimney that keeps the rain out
An open hole in the roof has a catch: rain puts out an uncovered fire. The fix is to cap the chimney with an angled roof piece. Smoke escapes underneath while the rain cannot reach the fire.
Why you cannot sleep in your bed
A bed only works under a roof with a fire nearby. If the game will not let you sleep, one of those two is missing. Check whether the fire has gone out and whether the roof above the bed is complete. Put the bed in the same room as a campfire with a chimney.
Comfort and the Rested buff
You get the Rested buff by resting at a fire or in a bed. Two conditions apply: you must not be wet and there must be no enemies nearby.
The base buff lasts 7 minutes, and every comfort level adds one minute. Comfort does not make the buff stronger, only longer. The cozier your home, the longer the buff lasts on your next trip.
Comfort counts the furniture within range of your character. Several pieces of the same type do not stack, different types do. Ten identical pieces help no more than one, so mix different kinds of furniture.
We deliberately leave out comfort values for individual pieces and the maximum level. The guides that calculate them date from 2021, and more furniture has been added since, most recently in 1.0.
Building helpers
The Hildir’s Request update in 2023 added tools that make building much more precise:
- Manual snap point selection with the Q and E keys.
- Precise placement while holding Ctrl.
- Copying a piece that is already placed.
- An upgraded crafting station gives you a larger build range.
The Crafting skill also lowers the stamina you spend placing pieces. The more you build, the less building tires you out.
What Valheim 1.0 added
Version 1.0 added 67° roofs and walls (4 metres tall), drawbridges (Drawbridge, Rustic and Timber), Timberwood and Scalewood pieces, the Wardrobe and more furniture. It reworked the hammer and serving tray menus and added an optional HUD window that shows who placed a building piece, handy on a shared server. The rest is covered in our 1.0 update overview.
Building in the Ashlands
Different rules apply in the Ashlands. Embers rain from the sky, wooden structures catch fire and the fire spreads. If you set up a base there, assume wood is not safe. A world modifier can turn fire spread on in other biomes too. What else waits in the south is covered in our Ashlands guide, and the biome order shows where each biome fits.
Building as a group? Split the work: one player chops and hauls, the other builds and watches stability. More tips are in our guide to playing as two.

FAQ
Stability drops with every joint away from the foundation. If a piece shows red under the hammer, it is at the limit. Support it with a beam or pole, ideally stone or a Wood Iron Pole, and use longer pieces.
Build the campfire on dirt (remove a floor tile) and leave a hole or chimney above it. Cap the chimney with an angled roof piece so rain cannot put the fire out.
A bed only works under a roof with a fire nearby. Check whether the fire has gone out and whether the roof above the bed is complete.
Raise your comfort. The base is 7 minutes and each comfort level adds a minute. Mix different types of furniture, identical pieces do not stack.
