Valheim has three traders: Haldor in the Black Forest, his sister Hildir in the Meadows and the Bog Witch in the Swamp. This guide explains how to find each of them, what they buy and sell, and how to earn the gold for a Megingjord or a bigger inventory. Prices and stock apply to Valheim 1.0 after patch 1.0.20 (15 October 2026) and may change with later patches.
The traders at a glance
| Trader | Biome | Main stock |
|---|---|---|
| Haldor | Black Forest | useful gear, Megingjord, inventory upgrades, eggs |
| Hildir | Meadows | clothing and cosmetics |
| Bog Witch | Swamp | feast and mead ingredients, Harvest clothing |
You pay with coins, in other words gold. Where each biome fits in your progression is shown in our biome order guide.
Haldor: the Black Forest trader
Haldor is always in the Black Forest, but in a different spot in every world. You have to find him yourself. Once you get close, a coin pouch icon appears on your map, so finding him again is easy.
What Haldor buys
Valuables you find while exploring sell for coins:
| Item | Sell price |
|---|---|
| Amber | 5 coins |
| Amber Pearl | 10 coins |
| Ruby | 20 coins |
What Haldor sells
- Megingjord for 950 coins, adds +150 carry weight.
- Ymir Flesh for 120 coins.
- Dverger Circlet, a circlet that gives light.
- A fishing rod and bait.
- Thunder Stone.
- Eggs that hatch into chicks.
- Since 1.0, inventory upgrades Deeper Pockets and Wider Pockets. You will appreciate them when hauling materials from the Deep North.
His stock grows as you defeat more bosses. Check back after every new boss. The Megingjord pays off when hauling metal that cannot teleport, more on that in our portals and ships guide. How eggs and hens work is covered in our taming guide.
How to get gold
You find coins mainly in two kinds of places:

- Troll Caves, dungeons in the Black Forest,
- Fuling villages on the Plains, where you have to go for Black Metal Scrap anyway.
Add Amber, Amber Pearl and Ruby, which you sell to Haldor. So do not throw valuables away, even when they take up inventory space. At 950 coins, the Megingjord will probably take a while to save up for.
Hildir: clothing and quests in the Meadows
Hildir is Haldor’s sister and arrived with the Hildir’s Request update (22 August 2023). You find her in the Meadows. She mainly sells clothing and cosmetics, plus the Sparkler, Iron Pit and Barber Kit.
Hildir’s Request: the stolen chests
Hildir asks you to bring back her stolen chests. Each one is carried by a miniboss in one of the dungeons added in the same update:
| Dungeon | Biome |
|---|---|
| Smouldering Tomb | Black Forest |
| Howling Cavern | Mountains |
| Sealed Tower | Plains |
For every chest you return, Hildir expands her stock. The Howling Cavern is a tougher mountain dungeon with a miniboss, so bring frost protection for the Mountains, such as the Wolf Fur Cape or Frost Resistance Mead.
The Bog Witch: ingredients from the Swamp
The Bog Witch arrived with The Bog Witch patch (29 October 2024) and lives in a hut in the Swamp. She sells ingredients for feasts and the new meads, such as Barrel Rings, Candle Wick, Scythe Handle, Fresh Seaweed, Pungent Pebbles and spices. She also has Harvest clothing and a Love Potion.
The same patch changed cooking too: uncooked dishes are prepared at the Food Preparation Table, mead bases in the Mead Ketill, and the Cooking and Farming skills were added. Feasts last longer than regular food and several players can share them, so they shine in a group. What to cook is covered in our food guide.
