Quick Resume: How It Works

Quick Resume: How It Works

Quick Resume is an Xbox Series X|S feature that keeps your games in progress suspended and lets you jump back into them exactly where you left off, with no loading and no main menu. It’s built on the Xbox Velocity Architecture, so it isn’t available on older consoles. And the key point right away: the only number Microsoft has ever confirmed is two pinned games. Microsoft never mentioned the number six that websites keep copying from each other.

What Quick Resume does

Microsoft describes it in one sentence: seamlessly switch between multiple games and instantly pick up where you left off. In practice, switching between two games in progress takes a few seconds instead of a full launch, and you can turn the console off and continue a mission the next day.

The feature is available on both new-generation models, meaning Xbox Series X and Series S, because both have the same storage architecture. The suspended games sit on that storage, so free space runs out faster on the 512 GB Series S, and the options for adding more are compared in the article on how to expand Xbox storage. On Xbox One, on the other hand, it’s missing and can’t be added, because it’s a hardware matter, not a system update. For many people, this and faster loading are the reason to upgrade, because unlike resolution you notice them in every game, every day. What goes into the budget for upgrading is covered in the article how much an Xbox costs.

What Microsoft says about Quick Resume and what it doesn’t

This table is the main reason this article exists. Plenty of numbers about Quick Resume get copied around the internet, and exactly one of them is backed up.

The rows marked “not stated” aren’t a gap in our research but the actual situation: Microsoft hasn’t written anything about them on its console pages or in announcements, and no independent confirmation exists. Anyone reading a specific number somewhere is reading a guess.

Pinned games: the documented limit is two

Since the March 2022 update, you can pin a game to Quick Resume so it doesn’t drop out while you play something else in the meantime. The process has three steps.

  1. Select the game you want to keep pinned.
  2. Press the Menu button on the controller.
  3. Choose Pin to Quick Resume.

You can have two pinned games. When both slots are taken and you pin a third, the console asks which of the pinned games it should replace. A pinned game then stays in place until you unpin it yourself, or until the game requires a mandatory update.

A mandatory update wipes the state

This is the only documented way to lose a pinned state without doing anything yourself, and it’s also the reason Quick Resume can’t be treated as a replacement for a save. With online games that patch often, the chance of a mandatory update landing between one evening and the next is fairly high. So save your game normally and treat Quick Resume as an extra convenience, not as insurance.

Microsoft itself has admitted that the feature doesn’t work equally well in every game: in some titles, it says, it doesn’t deliver the experience players expect, especially after a longer period of inactivity. That’s why the option to turn it off was added.

How to turn off Quick Resume for one game

Since spring 2026, you can turn off Quick Resume for a specific game so that it always launches fresh. It rolled out to everyone in the April 2026 system update. There are two ways.

  • From the Quick Resume group: open the More options menu on the game tile and select Manage Quick Resume.
  • From game management: Manage game and add-ons, then Quick Resume settings.

Turning it off makes sense for exactly that one game that behaves strangely when you come back: it freezes on a black screen, loses its server connection or drops to the menu with an error. Instead of guessing whether Quick Resume is to blame, you turn the feature off for that game and next time it launches normally. The rest of your library stays unchanged. But if the black screen persists even after a restart and doesn’t depend on a specific game, that’s a different problem, covered in the steps for when your Xbox won’t turn on.

Who Quick Resume won’t help

  • Xbox One owners. The feature isn’t there. What the older console can handle instead is covered in the overview of the best games on Xbox, and for the generation before that, in the article Xbox 360 today.
  • People who play one game a day. If you keep playing the same title and don’t switch in between, you’ll barely notice a difference. Quick Resume is a feature for someone who switches.
  • People who want a safety net. A Quick Resume state is a convenience. The safety net is a save, ideally in the cloud, because that survives an update and even a console swap.

FAQ

Which consoles does Quick Resume work on?

On Xbox Series X and Series S. Microsoft builds the feature on the Xbox Velocity Architecture, which only the new generation has, so it isn’t available on Xbox One or older consoles and can’t be added with an update. Whether older games will run on the new console at all is a matter of u003ca href=u0022/zpetna-kompatibilita-xbox/u0022u003eXbox backward compatibilityu003c/au003e.

How many games does Xbox remember in Quick Resume?

Microsoft doesn’t give any number; it only mentions multiple games. The only confirmed limit concerns pinned games, and that’s two. The number six that gets copied around websites has no basis in anything Microsoft has published, and no second independent source for it exists.

Why did the game start from the beginning when I came back?

The most likely reason is a mandatory game update. It wipes the Quick Resume state, and for pinned games it removes the pin itself too. Microsoft also says that in some titles the feature doesn’t deliver the expected result, mainly after a longer period of inactivity. If it keeps happening with one game, it’s worth turning Quick Resume off for that game.

How do I turn off Quick Resume?

For a specific game, not globally. Since the April 2026 system update, just open the More options menu on the game tile and select Manage Quick Resume, or go through Manage game and add-ons and Quick Resume settings. The game will then always launch fresh.

Does Quick Resume work with online games?

Microsoft doesn’t comment on online titles in connection with Quick Resume, so there’s no general rule. Expect, though, that games with their own servers reconnect to the server after waking up and get patched more often, so that’s where the state is lost most often.

When Quick Resume behaves unpredictably in a game, it’s faster to turn it off for that game than to hunt for the cause. What playing on Xbox involves without a new-generation console is described in the guide to Xbox Cloud Gaming. More articles about the console are in the Xbox on Gamers Together section.
