Valheim 1.0 is officially available in 14 languages, and on top of those the game ships with a set of community translations. The two groups are not the same thing, and Steam shows them in different places, which is why answers online often contradict each other. Here is which languages are official, what a community translation means in practice, what Steam says about audio and how language selection works on consoles.
The official languages
According to Steam, Valheim 1.0 officially supports these 14 languages:

- Turkish
- Japanese
- Portuguese (Brazil)

- Ukrainian
- Italian
- Korean
- Traditional Chinese
Ukrainian is the newest addition. It became an officially supported language with version 1.0, the release that left early access on 9 September 2026 and also brought the Deep North, a new save system and much more. The full list of changes is in our 1.0 update overview.
“Officially supported” means Iron Gate stands behind the translation. These are the languages the studio lists as supported on the game’s Steam page.
Interface, subtitles and audio
Steam can mark each language with full audio support. For Valheim, none of the 14 languages carries that mark. Official language support therefore covers the text: menus, item names, descriptions and other written content. Don’t expect a dubbed version in your language.
If you play in English, nothing changes for you. If you pick another official language, you get the translated text without a separate voice track listed on Steam.
Community translations
Besides the official languages, Valheim includes languages translated by its community. Steam lists them as “partially translated by the community”, and the list includes Czech and Slovak among others. These translations come from players, not from the studio.
Iron Gate is clear about two points. It does not guarantee the quality or completeness of community languages, and it is not looking for more people to help localise the game. If you spot a mistake in a translation, you report it through the form on the support page.
“Partially” is the key word. Version 1.0 added a whole biome with dozens of new items, enemies and locations, and how much of that is covered in each community language isn’t stated officially. If you play in a community language, it helps to know the English names of things. Localisations keep getting updated after launch; the most recent update came with patch 1.0.16 on 25 September 2026. That doesn’t change the status of community languages. They remain partial and unofficial.
Why Steam seems to contradict itself
On the Valheim Steam page, the language table shows only the 14 official languages. The community languages appear elsewhere: in the game description and in the system requirements, under the list of languages partially translated by the community.
So when a table says a language isn’t supported, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s missing from the game. It means the developer doesn’t officially support it. That is exactly the case for Czech, Slovak and the rest of the community list.
Languages on consoles
On consoles, the game picks its language on first launch based on your console’s language setting. Whether the community translations are also available on Xbox, PS5 and Switch 2 isn’t stated in official sources, so on console count on one of the 14 official languages.
Language doesn’t limit who you can play with. Since 1.0, Valheim has full crossplay between PC, Xbox, PS5 and Switch 2, so friends can share a world even if everyone runs the game in a different language. More guides are waiting in the Valheim hub.
