Valheim Moder: dragon eggs, frost and the dragon fight

With Moder, the work starts long before the fight: you have to carry three dragon eggs to her altar. They’re so heavy you can’t carry two at once on your own, and they won’t go through a portal. This guide shows where to look for her runestone and the nests in the mountains, how to stay protected from the cold, how to fight a dragon that flies, and what the Dragon Tear unlocks. It covers Valheim 1.0 with patch 1.0.20 (15 October 2026) and describes her Forsaken Power from the official Call to Arms list.

The Mountains: frost, silver and caves

Moder is the boss of the Mountains, which you head into after Bonemass. The cold up there hurts, and without protection you won’t last long. You’re covered by a Wolf Fur Cape, wolf armour or a Frost Resistance Mead.

The Mountains are the silver biome. You find silver with the Wishbone from Bonemass, which buzzes above a deposit, and mine it with an iron pickaxe. Apart from silver you’ll find Obsidian, Crystal, Freeze Gland, Red Jute, Onion Seeds, wolf materials (Wolf Fang, Wolf Pelt, Wolf Meat), Fenris Claw and Fenris Hair.

The Mountains have two dungeon types: Frost Caves and the tougher Howling Caverns with a miniboss, added in the Hildir’s Request update. The full route through the biomes is in our biome order guide.

Where to find the altar and the dragon eggs

A runestone (Vegvisir) at the stone structures and towers in the mountains shows you where the altar is. To summon Moder you need three Dragon Eggs, which sit in drake nests across the mountains.

Why the eggs are so much work

Dragon eggs are extremely heavy. You can’t carry two at once on your own, so every egg means a separate trip. And they won’t go through a portal, just like ores and metal bars. You have to bring the eggs to the altar without a portal, ideally from nests that are close by.

This is where a group pays off. Each player can carry one egg, so three of you get them to the altar in a single trip. How portals work and what they let through is covered in our portals and ships guide.

  1. Find the runestone at the stone structures to locate the altar.
  2. Check the drake nests and pick three eggs as close to the altar as possible.
  3. Carry them one at a time (or one per player), a portal won’t help.
  4. Drink a frost resistance mead, grab a ranged weapon and offer the eggs at the altar.

The fight: a dragon in the air and on the ground

AttackWhat it does
Frost breathCold that slows you down.
Ice projectilesShe fires them while flying.
ClawsA close-range attack when she’s on the ground.

Moder flies, and in the air a sword won’t reach her. You need a ranged weapon, so a bow and a good stack of arrows. When she lands you get a chance for melee hits, but watch out for the claws.

The frost breath slows you down, and when you’re slowed it’s hard to get out of the way of the next attack. That’s why frost protection matters during the fight too, not just on the way through the mountains. Wolf armour protects against the cold, and a Frost Resistance Mead tops it off.

In a group, split the roles: one player draws Moder’s attention, the rest shoot. Eat before the fight, three active foods raise your maximum health and stamina.

Reward: the Dragon Tear and the Forsaken Power

Moder drops the Dragon Tear and her trophy. You need the Dragon Tear for the Artisan Table, the next crafting station.

Hang the trophy on the Sacrificial Stones at the spawn. You activate the Forsaken Power with a key and it lasts 300 seconds. Since Call to Arms (9 September 2025) it’s no longer just a tailwind, as older guides say. Officially it gives:

  • constant tailwind when sailing,
  • +300 carry weight,
  • +10% movement speed,
  • 50% frost resistance.

The steady wind in your sails helps on long voyages, the carry weight helps when hauling ore that can’t go through portals, and the frost resistance helps whenever you head back into the mountains.

What Moder unlocks

After the mountains come the Plains, the black metal biome. You get Black Metal Scrap from the fulings in their villages, and at night you’ll also meet the Vile there. Barley and Flax grow on the Plains too. The biome’s boss is Yagluth, and how to summon him with five totems is explained in our Yagluth guide. If you’re still missing the Wishbone, go back to Bonemass.

FAQ

How many dragon eggs do I need for Moder?

Three Dragon Eggs. You find them in drake nests in the mountains and offer them at the altar, which a runestone at the stone structures points you to.

Can I take dragon eggs through a portal?

No, they won’t go through. They’re also so heavy that you can’t carry two at once on your own. Carry them one by one, or have each member of your group take one.

How do I protect myself from the cold in Valheim?

A Wolf Fur Cape, wolf armour or a Frost Resistance Mead will do it. You need protection in the mountains and during the Moder fight because of her frost breath.

What does the Forsaken Power of Moder do after Call to Arms?

It gives a constant tailwind, 300 more carry weight, 10% faster movement and 50% frost resistance. It lasts 300 seconds once activated.

What is the Dragon Tear for?

You need it for the Artisan Table, a crafting station you unlock after defeating Moder.
