Sega Rally 2 Is Back Online on Dreamcast After 27 Years

One of the Dreamcast’s earliest simulation-leaning racers is driving again. Sega Rally 2, released on the console in 1999 as a port of the Sega Model 3 arcade game, has had its online multiplayer switched back on in 2026 – and this time it isn’t locked to a single region.

Sega Rally 2 Is Back Online!

The online mode almost nobody got to play

Here’s the detail that slipped past most people at the time: Sega Rally 2 was technically one of the first Dreamcast games with online multiplayer. Sega stripped that functionality out of the global release and kept it exclusive to Japan, so players elsewhere never even knew it existed. Despite criticism aimed at its performance, the game still found a wide audience and remains one of the strongest racers Sega ever put out. Now, with its 27th anniversary approaching, the online component is finally available to everyone.

How the revival works

The Dreamcast is pushing 30 years old, and its pioneering online titles survive almost entirely thanks to fans and modders. Sega Rally 2 is no exception – its multiplayer has been reactivated through DreamPi, a software solution that connects Dreamcast consoles to the network. You can now race up to three friends in seamless online matches.

There is one catch. Alongside the software, you’ll need a Japanese copy of the game, because that’s the only version that contains the multiplayer codes. You’ll also need DreamPi 2.1 and a unique Login ID. The full rundown was published by Dreamcast Live.

What you get online

  • Private lobbies you can set up for your group
  • Chat with friends before a race starts
  • Access to all the available courses

Because you’re limited to the Japanese edition, the menus and icons aren’t translated. Given the game’s age, though, the interface isn’t complicated, and anyone comfortable with classic Dreamcast releases should decode the icons quickly.

Plenty to do offline too

If you’d rather skip the hassle of getting a console online, Sega Rally 2 still has split-screen play for two people on the couch. There’s also an offline league-style mode where you compete in championships and unlock rewards – enough content on its own to soak up hours. The revived online mode simply stacks extra replay value on top of all that.

It’s genuinely impressive that the Dreamcast still has an active community nearly three decades on. A handful of indie developers are even building new games for the platform, including Noah and the Poohloudies, a 3D platformer planned for release in the near future.
