Mario Kart Tour Is Gone for Good: Nintendo Has Shut Down the Servers

Mario Kart Tour is over. Nintendo has switched off the servers of its mobile racing game, and with that the title becomes unplayable. The shutdown was announced in advance, and the company says there are no plans to bring the game back in any form.

No offline version this time

With Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, Nintendo chose a different route – it ended the online service but released a paid offline version so players could keep going. Mario Kart Tour is not getting the same treatment. Nintendo has not explained why it skipped an offline release here, so if you had the game installed, there is nothing left to launch into.

That is a sour note for one of Nintendo’s biggest mobile successes. Mario Kart Tour drew plenty of criticism for how heavily it leaned on microtransactions, yet it still became one of the most commercially successful mobile titles the company has put out.

Nintendo’s mobile track record

Nintendo held out against mobile for a long time before finally launching apps built on its best-known franchises – Super Mario, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem and Mario Kart. The results have been uneven:

  • Fire Emblem Heroes turned into a long-running moneymaker.
  • Super Mario Run, with its more traditional one-off purchase model, had a harder time over the long haul.
  • Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp was a hit, but its servers were eventually retired in favor of a premium offline release.
  • Mario Kart Tour is now the latest to be shut down – this time with no replacement.

Where the Mario Kart Tour tracks live on

Not everything from Tour disappears with the servers. A number of its courses were rebuilt for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, so you can still drive them there. It is not the same experience as the mobile game, but it is the only official way left to revisit that content.

From a preservation standpoint, it is still a loss: an entry in one of Nintendo’s biggest series is simply no longer playable. If you want to keep track of what is happening across the series, we cover it in our Mario Kart news section.

Mario Kart World keeps rolling

The most recent entry in the series is alive and well. Mario Kart World launched alongside Nintendo Switch 2, earned mostly positive reviews and took a risk with its open-world structure, which the community has largely embraced.

No premium DLC has been announced for Mario Kart World so far. It did, however, get a free update that expanded the Knockout Tour mode and added Super Mario Kart courses. Whether more updates or paid expansions follow is still an open question, and while some Mario Kart Tour tracks could theoretically show up there one day, nothing like that has been confirmed.

What it means for you

If Mario Kart Tour was your go-to phone game, there is no workaround – no offline mode, no archive, no comeback. Your options are Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the recreated Tour courses, or Mario Kart World on Switch 2 for the newest take on the formula.
