If you have been putting off Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the wait might just pay off. The Pokémon Company confirmed that a physical Nintendo Switch 2 edition of the game is coming on October 29, and this time the Mega Dimension expansion is already baked into the package.
One cartridge, the whole game
The new release puts the base game and its DLC on a single cartridge, so you do not have to buy the expansion separately or download it after the fact. The card contains the enhanced Switch 2 version of the game, but it also runs on the original Switch. There, the content is the same as the Nintendo Switch version, without the additional features and content that rely on the Switch 2 hardware. That is handy if you want to grab it now and move to newer hardware later.
As a bonus, the package hands you 100 Ultra Balls, so your catching campaign starts with a well-stocked bag.
What Mega Dimension adds
Mega Dimension is the expansion that extends your time in Lumiose City: spatial distortions appear all over the city, and Hoopa helps you venture into hyperspace. The headline features are:
- newly discovered Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y, each using a different Mega Stone, plus Mega Chimecho, Mega Baxcalibur, Mega Zeraora, Mega Lucario Z and Mega Garchomp Z, as listed on the official DLC page,
- additional story content you can play after finishing the main story.
The expansion originally arrived on December 10, 2025 as a standalone download, so this bundle is mainly aimed at newcomers who want everything in one go rather than at players who already own both pieces.
Why now
Nintendo has no major brand-new Pokémon game lined up for this holiday season, which makes a repackaged Legends: Z-A an easy fit for the gift-buying stretch of the year. The next generation is still some way off: Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves are due next year as Switch 2 exclusives, and we have already rounded up the confirmed Pokédex entries for them.
Fans have also been speculating about possible re-releases of Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald landing in 2026, though nothing of the sort has been announced. If Gen 3 is your soft spot in the meantime, we covered a fan-made Emerald ROM hack that reworks battles into real-time combat.
What it means for you
In short: if you own Legends: Z-A and the DLC, there is no reason to double dip. If you do not own either, this is the cheapest and simplest way to get the full experience, and it future-proofs you for Switch 2. For everything else from the franchise, keep an eye on our Pokémon news section.
How much Pokémon Legends: Z-A and its DLC cost and how the game connects to HOME is covered in Z-A price and HOME transfers. More guides are in Pokémon guides.
