Pokémon Pokopia is throwing its first Halloween party, and it comes with a name of its own: Pumpkaboo’s Sweet Surprises. The limited-time event kicks off at 5am on October 17 and runs until November 1. The timer reads your Switch 2 system clock directly, so nudging the console’s date forward to get an early start isn’t going to work – the game is paying attention.
What the event brings
Structurally, Pumpkaboo’s Sweet Surprises follows the same blueprint as previous Pokopia events: new Pokémon, new decorations, a new habitat and a new event currency you have to earn yourself. This time around that currency is pumpkin candy.
From October 17 you start the whole thing by talking to Pumpkaboo, who shows up outside finished Town Centers. The dual-type Pokémon plays the role of event vendor and will hand over a pile of spooky new items – but only if you show up with candy to trade. The complete item list hasn’t been detailed yet, though promotional images already show off:
- Jack-O-Lanterns
- Spooky trees
- A glowing ghost decoration
One important limitation: the event won’t take place in the Cloud Islands or in the Bubbly Basin DLC area, so you’ll need to do your candy farming and decorating elsewhere.
How to farm pumpkin candy
Candy isn’t just lying around waiting to be picked up. To earn it you need to have at least started the Bleak Beach area, because that’s where you unlock Zorua’s Camouflage ability.
During the event, Camouflage becomes the core mechanic. You disguise yourself as one of your Pokémon’s favorite items, wait for them to wander over, and then reveal your true Ditto form. In other words, your Pokémon pay you in candy for startling and disappointing them – which is about as Halloween as it gets.
The Gourgeist habitat is the real long-term reward
As with earlier events, part of the new Halloween-themed items feeds into constructing a brand-new habitat. This time the goal is a home for Gourgeist, Pumpkaboo’s evolution.
Both Pumpkaboo and Gourgeist stick around after the event wraps up, so the Ghost-types you unlock become a permanent part of your Pokopia areas rather than vanishing on November 1. That’s the main reason not to write this off as a skippable cosmetic drop: the decorations are limited-time, but the Pokémon and the habitat are yours to keep.
Pokopia keeps growing
The update cadence has been brisk. The previous in-game event, Fetching Scales for Feebas, arrived shortly after the game’s big 2.0 update and the Bubbly Basin DLC – a summer celebration built around Feebas and Milotic – and the Halloween event continues that pattern of steadily widening the world.
The game also has the sales numbers to back that support up: Pokémon Pokopia passed five million copies sold back in August.
Looking ahead, the developers have confirmed four new Pokémon for the second DLC: Doduo, Snubbull, Skitty and Braixen. A third DLC is planned for 2027 and is set to add a new explorable town.
