Save the World has been free since 16 April 2026, with nothing to buy. It’s a co-op campaign where you and your friends build forts and traps against hordes of monsters. It runs on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2, but not on phones or the original Switch. This guide covers what the mode is, how to launch it, how free players differ from Founders and one console setting to watch out for. Accurate as of 20 October 2026.
What Save the World is
Save the World is a PvE mode, meaning players against the game rather than against each other. You play solo or with up to three friends and team up against hordes of monsters. Building is at the heart of it: you gather materials, put up walls and forts, and set traps inside them. Weapons are crafted from the resources you collect.
The characters you play are called heroes, and you level them up. They come in four classes:
- Soldiers
- Ninjas
- Outlanders
- Constructors
Mission maps are generated. Unlike Battle Royale, where 100 players fight over a single win, in Save the World you’re pulling in the same direction as everyone else, and what you build matters most. To see how it fits alongside the other modes, check our overview of Fortnite game modes.
Which platforms run Save the World
This is where Save the World differs most from the rest of Fortnite. Battle Royale runs almost everywhere, Save the World only on some devices.
| Device | Save the World |
|---|---|
| PC | yes |
| PlayStation | yes |
| Xbox | yes |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | yes |
| original Nintendo Switch | no |
| smartphones and tablets | no, not even via cloud gaming |
Epic states plainly that Save the World isn’t available on mobile or the original Switch, either natively or through the cloud. Cloud play as such isn’t ruled out: Epic lists GeForce NOW and Amazon Luna, just not on phones and tablets. More in our guide to Fortnite cloud gaming. How the two Nintendo consoles compare is covered in Fortnite on Switch.
How to launch Save the World
There’s no separate download, it’s part of Fortnite. The steps from Epic’s help article:
- Download Fortnite on your platform (it’s free).
- Launch Fortnite.
- Select Play.
- Find the Other Experiences by Epic section.
- Select the Save the World tile.
If the tile isn’t there, first check that you’re not on one of the devices listed above where Save the World isn’t available.
Free players vs. Founders
Every player gets the full game, it’s not a trial. The difference is the currency you earn by playing.

- Free players earn X-Ray Tickets. That’s Save the World’s own currency, spent on llamas and items in the Save the World shop.
- Founders are players who bought Save the World before it went free. They keep earning V-Bucks from Daily Quests, Mission Alerts and Storm Shield Defense missions.
V-Bucks are Fortnite’s main currency, used for outfits, pickaxes, emotes, wraps and Fortnite Passes. So for free players, Save the World isn’t a route to free V-Bucks. What V-Bucks cost and where to buy them legitimately is in our guide to V-Bucks prices. What’s free in Fortnite and what costs money is summed up in is Fortnite free.
What changed in March and April 2026
Epic announced the switch on 11 March 2026. At 8 PM Eastern Time that day it paused new purchases of Save the World to prepare. Existing players could keep playing.
Since 16 April 2026 the mode has been free for everyone. On that day existing players received Superchargers, Vouchers and Gold as a thank-you. Founders kept the V-Bucks earning described above.
Watch out for Performance mode on console
On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S you can play Fortnite at 120 FPS. Epic warns, though, that Save the World is unavailable when Performance mode is on. If the tile suddenly disappears on your console, check that setting first. How to turn 120 FPS on and off is covered in our guide on increasing FPS.
