Items are the main way you grow stronger during a League of Legends match. This guide covers how the in-game shop works, what starter items and basic components cost, what trinkets and Control Wards are for, what role quests give you from Season 2026, and how to save your own build so you don’t have to put it together every game. Gold prices are accurate as of patch 26.20 (20 October 2026). You won’t find champion-specific builds here, because those change every patch.
Where gold comes from and what you spend it on
Every champion has five abilities (a passive, three basic abilities on Q, W and E, and an ultimate on R), two summoner spells on D and F, plus items. Items are bought with gold, which you earn by killing minions and enemy champions, getting assists and destroying structures.
You spend gold in the in-game shop. Items give you stats such as attack damage (AD), ability power (AP), mana or movement speed, so every purchase makes your champion stronger.
Recommended Items: a good start, not a rulebook
The shop has a Recommended Items tab with suggested items for the champion you’re playing. Riot itself describes them as a decent template for a standard game. It also encourages you to experiment with different combinations and save a setup that works as your own Item Set (how-to below).
For your first few dozen games, simply buying the recommended items is the sensible approach. You’re learning the map, your champion and your lane, and the shop doesn’t need to eat your attention. Once you know which matchups leave you short on something, start adjusting.
Starter items and their prices
At the start of a match you have enough gold for one starter item and possibly a potion. For the Doran’s items, Riot spells out who they’re meant for:

| Item | Price (gold) | Who it’s for |
|---|---|---|
| Doran’s Blade | 450 | attackers (basic attack champions) |
| Doran’s Ring | 400 | casters (ability-based champions) |
| Doran’s Shield | 450 | defensive start |
| Dark Seal | 350 | starter item |
| Cull | 450 | starter item |
| Health Potion | 50 | restores health |
| Refillable Potion | 150 | potion that refills |
Prices come from Riot’s official game data for patch 26.20.
Components and boots
Bigger items in LoL aren’t bought in one go. You buy them in pieces called components, and they combine into the larger item in your inventory once you pay the rest. That means every trip back to base can buy you at least a piece and the stats that come with it. The basic components as of patch 26.20:
- Long Sword – 350 gold, attack damage (AD).
- Amplifying Tome – 400 gold, ability power (AP).
- Tear of the Goddess – 400 gold, mana.
- Boots – 300 gold, movement speed.
Boots are special because almost every champion buys them sooner or later. From Season 2026, some positions also get them upgraded through their role quest (more below).
Special starter items for jungle and support
Junglers don’t buy a Doran’s item. They pick one of three pets for 450 gold each: Scorchclaw Pup, Gustwalker Hatchling or Mosstomper Seedling. The pet travels with them and helps out in the jungle. How it evolves and what it does around objectives is covered in our jungle objectives guide.
Supports start with World Atlas for 400 gold. It upgrades itself during the match: from World Atlas to Runic Compass, then to Bounty of Worlds and finally to one of the final versions (Celestial Opposition, Dream Maker, Zaz’Zak’s Realmspike, Solstice Sleigh or Bloodsong).
Trinkets and Control Wards
On top of your six item slots you have a trinket slot, a free item with its own cooldown. There are three to choose from:
- Stealth Ward – periodically places a ward, an invisible eye that reveals the area around it.
- Oracle Lens – disables invisible wards and traps nearby.
- Farsight Alteration – longer range, reveals the target location.
A Control Ward is a ward you buy, and it costs 75 gold. Since patch 26.3, supports have them in their role quest slot right from the start of the match; after completing the quest they buy them for 40 gold and can hold up to two. How to use wards and where to place them is covered in our vision and wards guide.
Role quests: a seventh slot and better boots
From Season 2026 (patch 26.1), every position has its own role quest, a task that gives you a bonus once you complete it. Two of them matter most for items:
- Bot lane gets 300 extra gold on completion, 2 gold per minion and a takedown bonus (40 gold since patch 26.9). Most importantly, their boots move into the role quest slot, which frees up a seventh item slot.
- Mid lane gets a free tier 3 boots upgrade on completion (Crimson Lucidity, Swiftmarch, Spellslinger’s Shoes, Gunmetal Greaves, Chainlaced Crushers or Armored Advance), plus 8% bonus AD and AP (since patch 26.11, previously 6%).
Your role quest depends on the position the game assigns you in champ select. If you want to swap with a teammate, you have to do it with a position swap in champ select. Swiftplay and rotating modes don’t have the new role quests. What each position does is covered in our LoL roles guide.
How to save your own Item Set
An Item Set is your own list of items, split into blocks, that then shows up right in the in-game shop. Following Riot’s guide, you create it in the client outside a match:
- Open Collection and go to the Items tab.
- Click the plus next to the search bar (“Create New Item Set”).
- Choose the champion and map the set is for.
- Drag items into blocks, for example your start, when you’re ahead, when you’re behind, and wards.
- Save the set.
Your own Item Set replaces Recommended Items in the shop. Sets are saved server-side to your account, one champion can have several, and you can set a preferred inventory slot for an item. Sets downloaded from the community can’t be edited.
Swiftplay and Season 2026 changes
In Swiftplay, the Doran’s items are replaced by Guardian starter items: Guardian’s Orb, Guardian’s Blade and Guardian’s Hammer. The other modes are covered in our game modes overview.
Season 2026 shook up items considerably. It added nine new items, brought back Hextech Gunblade and Stormrazor, and since patch 26.1 base critical strike damage is back at 200%. The takeaway for you: older guides and builds from 2025 may no longer apply.
If you’re still deciding who to play, start with our beginner champions guide. Items work hand in hand with runes, which you set before the match.

As of patch 26.20 it costs 75 gold. After completing their role quest, supports buy it for 40 gold and can hold up to two in the role quest slot.
