Wards and vision in LoL: Faelights, Control Wards and trinkets

Vision in League of Legends decides who spots whom first, and the 2026 season changed it more than any season before. The map now has Faelights, rings of glowing mushrooms that turn an ordinary ward into a stronger superward. This guide covers what each trinket and the Control Ward do, what they cost, where the Faelights are, what changed with Scryer’s Bloom and why warding isn’t only the support’s job. Everything here applies to patch 26.20 and was checked on 20 October 2026.

Why vision matters in LoL

Most of Summoner’s Rift is covered by the Fog of War, so you can’t see who is moving where. Your own turrets give your team only limited sight into the fog. Brush blocks line of sight: anyone standing inside it is hidden from players outside. A ward is a small item you place on the ground, and it keeps watch over the area for you. Where you have a ward, the enemy can’t easily catch you off guard.

In its 2026 season preview, Riot said it wants vision to be easier to understand and more accessible to roles other than support. That’s why patch 26.1 added Faelights and adjusted the trinkets. At the same time, Riot stressed with patch 26.2 that vision control remains one of the support’s unique strengths. So everyone should ward, but supports carry the biggest share. For what each position does in a game, see our guide to LoL roles.

Vision tools: trinkets and Control Wards

The trinket is a separate item slot that’s free and recharges on its own. You pick one of three. Control Wards, on the other hand, are bought in the shop with the gold you earn in the game.

ToolWhat it doesPrice as of 20 October 2026
Stealth Ward (yellow trinket)Recharges over time and gives you a ward to place. Since patch 26.3 the cooldown is 210–90 s depending on level (170–90 s in 26.1).free
Oracle Lens (red trinket)Disables invisible wards and traps nearby. Lasts 8 s since patch 26.1.free
Farsight AlterationHas a longer range and reveals the spot you aim it at.free
Control WardA ward you buy in the shop. Since 26.3 supports start with them in the role quest slot.75 gold, 40 gold for supports after completing the role quest

You never buy trinkets, you just choose between them. How the shop works, what the starting items are and where Control Wards fit into your purchases is covered in our LoL items guide.

Faelights: the new vision feature from the 2026 season

A Faelight is a ring of glowing mushrooms on the ground. Riot added them in patch 26.1. Place a ward of any type on the ring and it becomes a faelight superward with these effects:

  • the ward’s vision radius grows by 25%,
  • for 45 seconds it reveals a bonus vision region whose shape is specific to each location,
  • the bonus region’s particles are only visible to your team,
  • the region doesn’t depend on the ward type, so a Control Ward won’t enhance it,
  • for Vision Score, the post-game vision rating, the superward counts with a +25% modifier.

Enemies only find out they’re standing in your bonus region in two ways. Either their team has a detector or sweeper effect inside the region, such as Oracle Lens, or they ping your ward directly. It works the other way too: when your team pings an enemy ward on a Faelight, you learn that you’re inside the enemy’s bonus region. Our pings and chat guide explains how pinging works.

Where the Faelights are

The patch notes list twelve spots. Eight are on the map from the start, and four more appear after the Elemental Rift transformation.

LocationCountWhen
Near each base gate4from the start of the game
In the island brush near top and bot lane2from the start of the game
In the river brush near mid lane2from the start of the game, region shrunk in patch 26.3
Near the side lanes4after the Elemental Rift transformation

If you’re new, start with the island brush near top and bot lane. A ward there gives you vision into the river during the laning phase, and Riot itself describes these as simple spots for lane phase.

Scryer’s Bloom

Scryer’s Bloom is a plant on the map. In patch 26.1 Riot added more of them so players have more tools for vision and for clearing enemy wards. The changes:

  • the default respawn time dropped to 200–260 s (random),
  • from 15:00 new locations appear with a respawn of only 90–120 s,
  • patch 26.3 removed the plants just outside the base gates.

Supports and Control Wards in the role quest slot

Since the 2026 season (patch 26.1) every position has a role quest, a task that grants a bonus once completed. For supports, it’s tied to vision. Since patch 26.3, Control Wards start in the support’s role quest slot from the beginning of the match. Once the quest is complete, the support pays 40 gold per Control Ward instead of 75 and can hold up to two in the role quest slot.

If you play support, Control Wards are your cheapest vision tool. Other positions pay full price, but they have the yellow trinket and, since 26.1, Faelights, so they’re not left blind. Still looking for a support to play? Check out the best beginner champions.

How to talk about vision with your team

The Smart Ping wheel (hold Alt or Ctrl and left-click) has two signals made for vision:

  • Need Vision tells your team that a spot needs vision,
  • Enemy Vision warns that the enemy has vision there.

Pings work on the terrain and on the minimap, and your team hears them. The full wheel and the chat commands are covered in our guide to LoL communication.

Wards and objectives

Vision pays off most around epic monsters: dragons, Void Grubs, the Rift Herald and Baron Nashor. If you can see around an objective, you know whether you can take it or whether the enemy is waiting in the brush. Pinging a dragon, Baron or the Herald starts a team vote, and if the objective isn’t on the map yet, use the All In ping. Spawn times and what each objective gives you are in our jungle objectives guide.

FAQ

What are Faelights in League of Legends?

Rings of glowing mushrooms on the map, added in patch 26.1. A ward placed on one gets 25% more vision radius and reveals a bonus region for 45 seconds that only your team can see.

How much does a Control Ward cost?

As of 20 October 2026, it costs 75 gold. Supports pay 40 gold after completing their role quest and can hold up to two in the role quest slot.

Which trinket should I pick?

All three are free. Stealth Ward gives you wards to place, Oracle Lens disables invisible wards and traps nearby, and Farsight Alteration reveals a distant spot thanks to its longer range.

Can the enemy tell I see them through a Faelight?

Only if their team has a detector effect in the bonus region, such as Oracle Lens, or if they ping your ward directly. Otherwise only your team sees the bonus region’s particles.

How many Faelights are on the map?

Eight at the start of the game: four near the base gates, two in the island brush near top and bot lane and two in the river brush near mid. Four more near the side lanes appear after the Elemental Rift transformation.
