In Overwatch 2 you play in a team of five and every player takes one of three roles: Tank, Damage or Support. Since February 2026 the game is officially called just Overwatch, and since the same month heroes get passive bonuses based on their sub-role. This guide explains what each role does in a team, what the sub-roles give you, where each hero belongs, who joined in 2026 and which mode to start with. Do not expect a tier list or a “best hero”: everything here is based on official Blizzard information as of 20 October 2026.
Three roles: Tank, Damage and Support
The main format is 5v5 in Role Queue, a queue where you pick your role in advance and only play heroes from it. Blizzard describes the roles on its official website like this:

- Tank – soaks up damage and shatters fortified positions. As a tank, you lead the charge.
- Damage – seeks out, engages and obliterates the enemy. These heroes are fearsome but fragile and need backup to survive.
- Support – empowers allies by healing, shielding and boosting damage, and disables foes. Blizzard calls them the backbone of the team’s survival.
The PlayStation Store lists 40+ heroes, and in summer 2026 Blizzard wrote about more than 50 heroes in the roster. You do not need to know them all: to begin with, pick a role and a few heroes in it that feel right.
Sub-roles and their passives
Since 17 February 2026 every role is split into sub-roles, and each sub-role gives its heroes a passive bonus. You do not have to activate it, it simply applies:
| Role | Sub-role | Passive |
|---|---|---|
| Tank | Bruiser | takes less critical damage, gains speed at critical health |
| Tank | Initiator | heals slightly while airborne |
| Tank | Stalwart | less knockback and less slowing |
| Damage | Sharpshooter | critical hits reduce movement ability cooldowns |
| Damage | Flanker | health packs heal more |
| Damage | Specialist | eliminations briefly speed up reloading |
| Damage | Recon | after a hit, sees enemies below half health through walls |
| Support | Tactician | excess ultimate charge carries over |
| Support | Medic | weapon healing also heals yourself |
| Support | Survivor | a movement ability triggers regeneration |
Which heroes belong to which sub-role
Blizzard introduced sub-roles on 17 February 2026. The table matches the hero overview on Blizzard’s website as of 20 October 2026. Since February two assignments have changed: Sombra moved from Damage to Support as a Tactician in Season 5, and Blizzard now lists Hazard as an Initiator:

The table also includes the heroes added after 17 February 2026: Sierra, Shion, D.Mon and Doctrine. More about them in the next section.
New heroes in 2026
2026 brought an unusually large number of new characters. On 10 February 2026 Blizzard released five heroes at once, and more arrived with later seasons:

- Anran (Damage), Emre (Damage), Domina (Tank), Mizuki (Support) and Jetpack Cat (Support) – all from 10 February 2026. According to Blizzard, Jetpack Cat is the first always-flying Support hero.
- Sierra (Damage) – Season 2.
- Shion (Damage) – Season 3, from 16 June 2026.
- D.Mon (Tank) – Season 4, from 11 August 2026.
- Doctrine (Support) – Season 5, from 6 October 2026.
Doctrine is the newest hero, and our current season guide covers Doctrine in more detail. Some heroes are unlocked gradually as you play, but we do not describe the exact process because we have not verified it in official sources.
Which mode to start with
Start with unranked matches (Quick Play) in Role Queue 5v5. According to Blizzard’s summer 2026 numbers, it is the most played mode, with roughly 54 % of daily players. You play one role chosen in advance, which is the best way to learn it properly.
When you want more chaos, try Open Queue 6v6, a queue without a fixed role, or Mystery Heroes with a random hero. All options are explained in our game modes guide. Overwatch is free on PC and consoles; details are in our guide on whether Overwatch is free.
When to play ranked
Competitive (ranked) has a separate rank for each role, and before your first rank you play 10 placement matches. It pays off to go in once you feel confident in your role. Our ranked guide explains the system. If you know Marvel Rivals, have a look at our comparison of both.
