Overwatch 2 game modes: 5v5, 6v6 Open Queue, Stadium and Arcade

As of 20 October 2026, Overwatch 2 has four main match types: Role Queue 5v5, Open Queue 6v6, Mystery Heroes 6v6 and Stadium. On top of that, Arcade hosts limited-time events. Since February 2026 the game is officially called just Overwatch, but the modes stayed the same. This guide explains how they differ, which one most people play according to Blizzard and where you play for rank.

Modes by how many people play them

In summer 2026 Blizzard published, in a Director’s Take article, what share of daily players plays each mode. One player can try several modes a day, so the total is over 100 %:

ModeFormatRankedShare of daily players
Unranked Role Queue5v5no~54 %
Ranked Role Queue5v5yes~37 %
Unranked Open Queue6v6no~19 %
Ranked Open Queue6v6yes~8 %
Unranked Mystery Heroes6v6no~4 %
Stadium RankedStadiumyes (own ranks)~3 %
Stadium UnrankedStadiumno~3 %

The numbers make it clear that Role Queue 5v5 is the main format. The data is from summer 2026 and may have shifted since. You can read the original article on Blizzard’s website.

Role Queue 5v5

In Role Queue you pick a role before the match, Tank, Damage or Support, and play only heroes from it. It is the main format of the game and also hosts the most played ranked queue. If you are still learning the roles, start with our beginner’s guide.

Open Queue 6v6

Open Queue is a queue without a fixed role, played six against six. It exists in both unranked and ranked versions. Hero changes Blizzard makes for 5v5 also apply to 6v6 unless stated otherwise.

Quick Play Hacked tests

In summer 2026 Blizzard tried temporary 6v6 variants in Quick Play (unranked matches) under the name Quick Play Hacked. Flex Queue with a 1-3-2 setup ran from 16 to 19 July, and Dynamic Queue from 30 July to 2 August. These were tests, and Blizzard itself says their results do not necessarily mean a change to the main format.

Mystery Heroes

In Mystery Heroes you get a random hero. Since Season 2 (14 April 2026) it is played 6v6 according to the patch notes, without perks, and tanks use their 6v6 balance there. It is a good way to get to know heroes you would never pick yourself.

Stadium

Stadium is a separate mode with its own rating. In Stadium Ranked you play for the ranks Contender, Elite, Pro, All Star and Legend, and at the start of a season you begin 5 to 15 divisions lower depending on where you finished before.

Blizzard no longer adds new heroes or maps to Stadium. It still supports the mode with balance changes, rank resets and rewards, so you can keep playing it.

Map voting and New / Reworked tags

Since Season 2, players vote on maps. Maps tagged New or Reworked give a bonus: extra Battle Pass XP in Quick Play and an automatic +10 Competitive Points in Competitive. Our ranked guide explains how ranked and Competitive Points work.

The newest map is Watchpoint: Grímsvötn from Season 5. It is an Escort map, a mode where you escort a payload, and according to Blizzard the first new Escort map since Overwatch 2 launched.

Arcade and Mystery Madness

Arcade is where you find limited-time and more casual modes. As of 20 October 2026 it hosts the Halloween event Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games, running from 6 October to 2 November 2026. You get a random hero and new abilities every time you die. It is played 5v5 in Open Queue with a 1-2-2 setup, on Control maps as a Best-of-3. For everything else the current season added, see our Season 5 guide.
