Overwatch 2 ranked: how Competitive Play and ranks work

Overwatch 2 ranked: how Competitive Play and ranks work

Ranked in Overwatch 2 is officially called Competitive Play, and it changed a lot in 2026: on 10 February 2026 everyone’s ranks were reset, every player now plays 10 placement matches per role, and Season 4 added a new rank called Emerald. Since February 2026 the game is officially called just Overwatch, but the rank system stayed. This guide explains how Competitive works in Role Queue and Open Queue, which ranks Blizzard names, what Top 500 Challenger is and what you get for reaching Diamond. Valid as of 20 October 2026.

Role Queue and Open Queue in Competitive

Competitive is available in two queues:

  • Role Queue – you pick a role (Tank, Damage or Support) before the match and play only that role. You have a separate rank for each role, so your Support rank can be higher than your Tank rank.
  • Open Queue – a queue without a fixed role, played 6v6. It has its own rank as well.

According to Blizzard’s summer 2026 numbers, roughly 37 % of daily players play Ranked Role Queue 5v5 and roughly 8 % play Ranked Open Queue 6v6. Role Queue is clearly the main ranked format. Our game modes guide covers the differences between the queues.

The 2026 reset and 10 placement matches

With the first season of 2026 (10 February 2026), Blizzard reset all ranks in Role Queue and Open Queue to Unranked. To get a rank, you have to play 10 placement matches for each role separately. Hero Skill Ratings, the skill rating on individual heroes, only got a soft reset.

Importantly, the reset did not change the rank distribution. Competitive Points from 2025 were converted to Legacy Competitive Points.

The ranks Blizzard names

In the official 2026 patch notes Blizzard names these ranks, from lower to highest:

RankWhat we know
Goldtogether with Platinum, home to most players according to Blizzard
Platinumtogether with Gold, home to most players according to Blizzard
Emeraldnew since Season 4 (11 August 2026), between Platinum and Diamond
Diamondreaching it unlocks the Crimson Wolf skin for Doomfist
Masterdivisions 5 to 1
Grandmasterdivisions 5 to 1
Championhighest rank, divisions Champion 5 to Champion 1

The table starts at Gold, because from the lowest ranks up to Champion these are the only ones Blizzard names in the sources we use. For the same reason we do not list numeric ranges for individual ranks.

Emerald arrived with Season 4, according to the August patch notes. The same season added the Rank Distribution Indicator, which shows where your rank sits compared to other players in that queue.

Top 500 Challenger

Top 500 is the leaderboard of the best players, and since 2026 it is sorted by Challenger Score. To appear on it, you need 250 wins in Competitive. It used to be 750, so the bar dropped a lot. Players in Diamond no longer count towards the leaderboard.

Placing earns you a player icon. A new icon comes with every rank reset, which happens every three seasons.

Rewards: Crimson Wolf and Competitive Points

Reach Diamond or higher in either Role Queue or Open Queue and you unlock the Crimson Wolf skin for Doomfist. Crimson Wolf is also the 2026 weapon variant. You get it for Competitive Points, starting from the third week of the season.

You can boost your Competitive Points on maps tagged New or Reworked. Since Season 2 they automatically give you +10 Competitive Points in Competitive.

Team Drives and Stadium Ranked

Season 4 brought experimental Team Drives, first held on 4–7 September 2026. It is a trial format.

Stadium Ranked runs completely separately. Stadium has its own ranks: Contender, Elite, Pro, All Star and Legend. At the start of a season you begin 5 to 15 divisions lower, depending on where you finished. Blizzard keeps supporting Stadium with balance changes and resets, but no longer adds new heroes or maps to it.

When to start ranked

Before your first placements it is worth knowing your role from unranked matches. Our beginner’s guide explains roles and sub-roles. What Season 5 added, including the new hero Doctrine, is in our current season guide.

We do not cover the requirements for unlocking Competitive or penalties for leaving matches. The official Blizzard Support pages were not available to us on the verification date.
