What Counter-Strike 2 is about
Two teams of five take turns on the terrorist and counter-terrorist sides. Terrorists want to plant the bomb; counter-terrorists stop them or defuse it. The match is played in rounds, and each round you buy weapons and grenades with money from previous rounds. Kills pay a reward based on the weapon, and the losing team gets a loss bonus, so every round is also an economic decision. How it works is covered in our economy and weapon prices article.
What changed from CS:GO
CS2 runs on the Source 2 engine with new lighting and materials. Thanks to sub-tick, the server knows the exact moment of movement and shots even between ticks, so responsiveness doesn’t depend on tickrate. Smokes are now dynamic: they fill the space, react to light, and gunfire or an HE grenade briefly opens a gap in them. Matches are played to 24 rounds, MR12. All items and Prime from CS:GO carried over to CS2. The details are in our what is CS2 article.
Premier, Competitive and maps
The main ranked mode is Premier. You have a single number, CS Rating, matches are played on the seven Active Duty maps and the teams pick the map. In Competitive you choose the map yourself and have a separate rank on each map, in the classic 18 skill groups from Silver to Global Elite. Premier runs in seasons; the current Season Five started on July 8, 2026. How ranks work is in our ranks, Premier and CS Rating guide.
Active Duty is Ancient, Anubis, Cache, Dust II, Inferno, Mirage and Nuke. Valve rotates maps regularly; Cache returned in July 2026 after seven years. On top of that there are Casual, Deathmatch, Wingman, Retakes and, since September 2026, Rush for three on three. The map overview is in our CS2 map pool article.
What critics praise and what bothers players
On Metacritic, CS2 has 82 from 16 reviews. TechRadar Gaming called it the best competitive shooter on the market, but said its wall of noise and violence will feel impenetrable to newcomers. GameStar praised the much-needed tech update for the ageless gameplay, but noted it still lagged behind CS:GO in precision and scope. Gamereactor called it still the best in its sub-genre.
On Steam the game has 85.8% positive from 9,935,225 reviews, rated Very Positive. That number includes CS:GO-era reviews, though, since both games share one Steam page. Metacritic users are more critical at 5.5 out of 10. Against cheaters Valve uses VAC, which has mistakenly issued mass bans several times in the past and then reversed them.
Prime, VAC and skins
CS2 is free, but Prime Status at €13.29 or $14.99 is required for Premier and drops, and in ranked matches it pairs you mostly with other Prime players. A VAC ban is permanent and can’t be appealed. Skins are bought on the Steam Community Market and in the in-game store, and cases open with a key that costs $2.49. Since July 2025, traded items carry a seven-day protection against scams. More in our articles on Prime and VAC bans and skins and trading.
State of the game in 2026
Valve updates the game regularly. In September 2026 it reworked the crosshair, which is now resolution-independent, and added the Rush mode. In March 2026 it changed reloading so the whole magazine is discarded, and in July it reworked the bomb explosion, whose blast wave now weakens around corners. The last update before our cutoff came out on October 14, 2026.
Requirements and platforms
CS2 runs only on PC with Windows and Linux. Valve’s minimum is Windows 10, a four-thread CPU such as an Intel Core i5 750, 8 GB of RAM, a 1 GB graphics card with DirectX 11 and 85 GB of free space. On Steam Deck it’s rated Playable. Full audio is English only; the interface and subtitles come in many languages. Details are in our system requirements article.
Who Counter-Strike 2 is for (and who it isn’t)
It suits you if you enjoy games where precision, map knowledge and team communication decide the outcome, and you want to improve match by match. CS:GO players will feel at home, and since the game is free, you can try it at no risk.
Skip it if you want quick action without a learning curve or a game you can win without a team. Your first few dozen matches will be rough, and without Prime you won’t play Premier.
Verdict: Is Counter-Strike 2 worth it?
Yes, if you want a tactical shooter where skill decides. We give it 8/10.
Counter-Strike 2 is built on precise gunplay, the round economy and teamwork, pushed forward by Source 2, sub-tick and dynamic smokes. Critics and players rate it highly, and Valve keeps expanding the game. Points off for a tough start for newcomers, for the Prime Status you need for Premier, and for the skin and case trade around the game.
