Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) is Valve’s team shooter in which Terrorists (T) face Counter-Terrorists (CT). It launched on 27 September 2023 as a free upgrade to CS:GO and replaced the old game entirely. This guide covers what changed under the hood (the Source 2 engine, sub-tick, new smokes), what is new in the ranked modes, which modes you can play and what carried over from CS:GO. Everything applies to the PC version as of 19 October 2026, during Premier Season Five.
CS2 at a glance
CS2 is free-to-play on Steam, developed and published by Valve. Valve announced it on 22 March 2023 and first released it only as a restricted Limited Test. The full version launched on 27 September 2023 and, as Valve announced, replaced CS:GO. That is why the Steam store page for app 730 still shows the original CS:GO release date, 21 August 2012.

Source 2: new graphics and new tools
The biggest change is the move from the CS:GO engine to Source 2. The game uses physically based rendering, new lighting and new materials. Map makers got better tools for the Steam Workshop.

Valve did not treat every map the same way. It sorted them into three levels:
- Touchstone maps close to the original: Dust2, Train and Mirage.
- Upgraded maps with a new look and changes, for example Nuke and Ancient.
- Completely rebuilt maps, for example Italy and Overpass.
Sub-tick instead of tick rate
In CS:GO the server evaluated the game in fixed steps called ticks: 64 per second in matchmaking and 128 in professional play. CS2 replaces this with sub-tick. The server knows the exact moment you moved or fired, even when it falls between two ticks. Responsiveness no longer depends on tick rate, and Valve’s Steam page describes it as tick-rate-independent gameplay.
Since 21 January 2026, landing after a jump is also calculated with sub-tick precision.
Dynamic smokes
Smoke grenades in CS2 are volumetric. The smoke fills the space it spreads into, reacts to light and looks the same for every player. Gunfire and an HE grenade blast briefly open a gap in it.
Premier, CS Rating and MR12
CS2 has two ranked modes. Premier shows your skill as a single number, the CS Rating, is played on Active Duty maps with a map pick and has global and regional leaderboards. Premier requires Prime Status, which costs $14.99 in USD (as of 19 October 2026). Competitive keeps the classic skill groups from Silver to Global Elite, but they are now tracked separately for each map. Our guide to ranks and Premier has the details.
Match length changed too. Premier, Competitive and Majors are played as MR12, a maximum of 24 rounds with 12 rounds per half. At 12:12 there is an overtime of 6 rounds.
As of 19 October 2026 the Active Duty map pool has seven maps: Ancient, Anubis, Cache, Dust II, Inferno, Mirage and Nuke. Premier and professional tournaments are played on them, and the pool changes with the seasons. Our CS2 map pool guide tracks the history of changes.
Other modes
Beyond the ranked modes, Valve keeps adding to the game:
- Retakes (since 22 October 2025): 4v3 after the bomb has been planted.
- Rush (since 22 September 2026): 3v3 in randomly drawn arenas.
- Custom games from the Workshop: the community builds its own modes and maps. How to get into them is explained in our guide to FACEIT and servers.
New players start with offline practice, Casual and Deathmatch. Competitive matchmaking unlocks as you play.
What carried over from CS:GO
If you played CS:GO, you kept your inventory. All items from CS:GO moved to CS2. How trading and the market work today is explained in our CS2 skins guide. Prime Status from CS:GO still applies in CS2, so you do not have to buy it again.
