What Rocket League is about

You get the rules right away: two teams, two goals, one giant ball. But instead of players, you drive cars that can jump, flip and fly through the air on boost. It’s played 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3, and besides classic football there are extra modes Rumble, Hoops and Snow Day. Matches are short, so you can fit in a quick game even if you only have a few minutes. How to get started is in our beginner’s guide.

Since Season 20, newcomers start with New Driver challenges. They measure your skill, set your starting rank, and once you complete them, Competitive unlocks. In ranked you get a rank after 10 matches and climb from Bronze through Gold, Platinum, Diamond and Champion up to Grand Champion and Supersonic Legend. Every season starts with a soft reset. More in our ranks guide.

Season 24 and new controls

The current Season 24 has been running since September 23, 2026. It brought Honor Duels, where after a match you can challenge an opponent to a 1v1, trading three duplicate Black Market items for one new one, and new default mouse and keyboard controls with a Free Look camera. The Rocket Pass has a free and a premium track, and weekly and seasonal challenges are free for everyone. What’s in the season is in our current season guide.

What critics praise and what bothers players

On Metacritic the PS4 version has the most reviews, 85 from 50 reviews, while the PC version has 86 and the Xbox One version 87. The reviews are mostly from 2015. The Telegraph gave it 100 and, in its exhilarating mix of chaos and control, sees a multiplayer game as good as any that year. Metro GameCentral, at 90, calls it one of the best competitive arcade games in years, crafted from a very simple premise. PC Gamer gave it 87 and called Rocket League the best football game without feet.

Players agree with the critics. On Steam Rocket League has 87.6% positive out of 580,389 reviews, which is Very Positive. Those reviews come mainly from people who got the game on Steam earlier, because new players can no longer download it there.

Platforms, account linking and crossplay

On PC you play through the Epic Games Store and need an Epic Games account. As of October 21, 2026, the game’s Steam page offers no purchase or download, but people who own it there keep getting updates. On PlayStation the PS4 version is also playable on PS5, plus Xbox, Switch and Switch 2. Once you link your accounts, you share your inventory, competitive rank and Rocket Pass tier across all platforms, but not your Credits. The game supports cross-platform play, and on consoles splitscreen for up to 4 players. How to link accounts is in our account linking guide.

Price and requirements

The game is free; you only pay for cosmetics in the shop and Rocket Pass Premium. The currency is Credits. All items are purely cosmetic and don’t affect gameplay. The details are in our price and platforms guide.

Requirements are low: according to the Epic store and Steam, 4 GB of RAM and a GeForce 760 are enough, with 8 GB of RAM and a GTX 1060 recommended. More in our system requirements. On Steam Deck the game is Verified for those who own it on Steam.

Who Rocket League is for (and who it isn’t)

It’s for you if you want short competitive matches where only your skill and teamwork with your partner matter. It’s free, so you can try it with no risk, and you can play with friends online or on one screen.

Skip it if you don’t have the patience to learn. Controlling the car in the air takes a lot of practice, and in ranked you’ll meet players who have years of it behind them.

Verdict: Is Rocket League worth it?

Yes. It’s free, matches are short and the fun lasts for years. We’re giving it 8/10.

Eleven years on, Rocket League is still fun, and critics and players praise it alike. Psyonix keeps developing it with seasons and new controls. Points come off for the steep learning curve and for Credits not being shared across platforms.
