Bungie has published a post about the studio’s future, and it contains the single sentence Destiny players have been asking for since the Destiny Content Vault first swallowed half the game: all vaulted Destiny 2 content is coming back. The studio calls Destiny foundational to what it does, and says that before it explores any new Destiny projects, it wants the removed content playable again for everyone.
The blog post is titled “The Next Chapter for Bungie” and is signed by Studio Head Poria Torkan and Josh Deane, Head of Product and General Manager of Marathon.
What exactly is coming back
Bungie says it is starting work on returning vaulted Destiny 2 content to the live game. In the studio’s own framing, removing those experiences had a lasting impact on player trust and enjoyment of Destiny, and the company is now beginning the work of bringing them back. That covers:
- Campaigns that were removed from the game
- Destinations, meaning the old patrol zones
- Raids that were pulled into the Destiny Content Vault
There is one important caveat. Bungie stresses that this is not a simple job and that it will take months of work, so treat it as a direction of travel rather than a patch you download next week. Based on how the studio describes it, this should arrive as a free return of content for people who already own Destiny 2, not as a new paid product.
What is not coming back
A follow-up report from Forbes fills in the less cheerful side of the plan. Seasonal holiday events such as Festival of the Lost and The Dawning most likely will not return. More than 25 pieces of seasonal content are also not expected to come back at all.
On top of that, Bungie is not planning regular patches for the game – only fixes for serious bugs. The unfinished expansion Shattered Cycle is reportedly not in active development either. So the picture is a large archaeological restoration project rather than a full relaunch of live service.
Why this is happening now
Context matters here. Destiny 2’s final update landed on June 9, after Bungie announced on May 21 that it would wind down service and support for the game. The reaction was loud and it never really stopped. Players wanted either a full Destiny 3 or at least some kind of closure for the franchise.
That pressure took a lot of shapes. Recent Sony State of Play comment sections were flooded with Destiny 3 requests alongside calls to boycott the company over its digital-only approach. An official Destiny 3 petition passed 410,000 unique signatures. Players also organized multiple server slams inside Destiny 2 to push concurrent player counts up and make the message impossible to ignore. Over the past couple of weeks, several content creators started teasing cryptic hints that a Bungie announcement was close – and this post is it.
What it could mean for your loot
Bringing back old destinations, campaigns and raids also means access to old loot. Fan-made projects had already restored the Leviathan raid and several vaulted locations outside the official client, and the response to those was overwhelmingly positive. Bungie is now chasing the same goal inside the game itself, with no external tools required.
The open question is how far the studio goes with modernization. If vaulted weapons and armor become obtainable at T4 and T5, potentially with new armor set bonuses in the mix, the return would land far harder than a straight re-release. The new armor sets from the Monument of Triumph update already generated plenty of hype, so pairing old content with current-tier rewards is the version players are hoping for.
And what about Marathon?
Recent rumors claimed Marathon and Destiny 2 would merge, but Bungie officials shot those down quickly. The video and blog post from Torkan and Deane point the other way: Destiny 2 gets its vaulted content back, while Marathon is lined up for a major refresh with Season 3 in December.
We cover the series regularly, so if you want to follow how the unvaulting actually rolls out, everything lands in our Destiny news hub.
