What Is Aniimo? Genre, Twining and Platforms Explained

Aniimo is a free-to-play open-world action RPG where you catch creatures and then literally fuse with them. That mechanic is called Twining. It launched on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on September 16, 2026, with the mobile version following on September 23, 2026. Combat runs in real time, not turn-based – so Aniimo shares its creature-collecting with Pokémon, but not its combat system.

What kind of game Aniimo is

Aniimo is developed by Pawprint Studio and published under FunPlus. You play a Pathfinder – an explorer who looks after the creatures roaming the continent of Idyll and catches them. It isn’t a classic turn-based RPG: battles in Aniimo run in real time, so you dodge, time your attacks and control your movement directly.

That’s exactly where the Pokémon comparison breaks down. The collecting loop – catch, train, build a team – is the same idea the Nintendo series popularized, but the combat system isn’t. There are no turn-based battles here; Aniimo sits closer to an action open-world game with a creature-collecting layer on top. Search carousels for the game also surface Egg Heist, Palworld, Ananta and DokeV – Aniimo shares a genre label with most of them (open-world, creature-collecting), rather than a specific mechanic.

Idyll is split into fourteen regions, from coastline to mountains, and each one hosts different creatures depending on environment, weather and time of day. Our Idyll map breaks down the continent and the order it makes sense to explore it in.

The game leans on exploration rather than a linear story – there is a main questline, but you’ll spend most of your time outside in the open world, not sitting through dialogue.

Twining: how Aniimo differs from Pokémon

Twining is the mechanic that sets Aniimo apart from the rest of the genre. When you catch a creature, it doesn’t just sit in your team as a passive companion – once activated, you literally fuse with it and briefly become it. You control its movement and abilities directly: if the creature can fly, dig underground or sprint, your character does that now.

That’s a real departure from what players are used to from other games with animal companions. Elsewhere you mount a creature like a vehicle – you’re still controlling your own character, and the animal is just a carrier. In Aniimo you briefly become the creature itself, and that changes the pace of the whole game: exploration, environmental puzzles and combat all revolve around which creature you need to be right now, not just which one is in your team.

Twining isn’t limited to combat, either. The game reuses the same mechanic outside of fights – for example to get past obstacles in the open world, where flight or digging opens a path your character couldn’t take on their own.

For the step-by-step details of how Twining works and which creatures suit which situations, we have a dedicated piece on how Twining works – this article sticks to the concept, not the walkthrough.

How many creatures are in the game

The official marketing figure is “200+ creatures” – used by both FunPlus and the Xbox Game Pass listing. One honest caveat belongs right next to it: that’s a count including every form and variant, not a count of base species.

Nobody actually agrees on how many base creatures exist – databases and fan sites differ by dozens on that number, and by hundreds once you count every form. The reason is simple: each source is counting something different – base forms, evolution stages, regional variants. We untangle that in a separate creature list, which also explains why the numbers don’t match.

Creatures are caught using a trap called an Aniipod, and their appearance is affected by environment, weather, time of day and rare occurrences – so the same spot can offer different creatures depending on the hour or the weather. Most, though not all, can also evolve through three growth stages.
